East Williamston were away for tonights Pembs Main League match against Letterston.
Mark played Singles but, having injured his finger (thankfully not his bowling hand), he was in pain and suffering. Letterston started strongly, taking 4 on the first, 1 on the second and 2 on the third. Mark pulled 2 back on the fourth but the home side replied with 2 on the fifth, 4 on the sixth, 1 on the seventh, 2 on the eighth and 1 on the ninth. Mark never gave up, taking 1 on the tenth and 1 on the eleventh but with 2 more to Letterston on the final end they took a comfortable win. Theresa and Phill P played Pairs and took the first end with 1. Letterston came back taking the next two ends with 2. East Williamston successfully surrounded the jack to take 3 on the fourth. Letterston replied with 1 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth to level the scores. Another 1 to the visitors on the seventh, followed by a fantastic 4 on the eighth and 1 on the ninth and East Williamston had a 6 shot advantage. However Letterston were back in it with 3 on the tenth and 2 on the eleventh. Going into the final end East Williamston’s lead was now just 1 shot. Letterston surrounded the jack and East Williamston were unable to break up the pack, giving the home side 4 and the win. Dai, Mandy and Fran played Triples. Letterston struck first with 3 but East Williamston came straight back with 3 on the second. East Williamston were suddenly struggling to get to the jack and Letterston took advantage by burying it and, in doing so, took 1 on the third, 5 on the fourth, 2 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth, grabbing themselves an eleven shot lead. Fortunately for East Williamston they started to find the jack again, taking 1 on the seventh and 2 on the eighth. On the ninth end a fantastic team effort saw the visitors holding 6 and hopeful of dramatically cutting Letterston’s lead. However, with the final bowl of the end the Letterston skip smashed into the pack, sending bowls scattering and cutting East Williamston down to 3. Going into the final end the lead had been cut to 5 but, again, Letterston secured the jack to take 1 and the win. Stephen, Steve, Cliff and Phill E played Rinks. Again the home team were well practiced in surrounding the jack and took 2 on the first, 1 on the second and a painful 5 on the third. East Williamston came back with 2 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth. Another 1 to Letterston on the sixth and their lead had extended to 6. 1 more to the visitors on the seventh but with 3 on the eighth and 1 on the ninth Letterston took the win. East Williamston were home for tonight’s South Pembs League match against Kilgetty.
Playing on one mat, first up was Fran, playing her first league Singles match. As the nerves settled Kilgetty took the first end with 1. However Fran came back with 2 on the second and 2 on the third. Kilgetty took 3 on the fourth which meant that going into the fifth end the scores were all level, but Fran surrounded the jack to take 3 and the lead once more. Fran was holding two on the sixth but Kilgetty managed to sneak their last bowl in to steal 1. East Williamston were still two shots ahead going into the final end however, and in a replay of the sixth end, Kilgetty took another 1, but it wasn’t enough and East Williamston took the win. Next up were Theresa and Phill P playing Pairs. Again Kilgetty struck first, taking 2 on the first end. East Williamston came back, taking 2 on the second, 1 on the third and 1 on the fourth. East Williamston were holding two until Kilgetty nudged them off the jack to take 1 on the fifth. Undeterred East Williamston regrouped, taking 1 on the sixth and 2 on the last end to secure the win. Paula, Cliff and Mandy played Triples and, as with the previous two games, Kilgetty took the first end with 1. However the home side played some excellent drawing shots and, despite Kilgetty’s best efforts, the visitors were unable to disrupt play, with East Williamston winning the next six ends with 1 on the second, 3 on the third, 1 on the fourth, 1 on the fifth, 1 on the sixth and a great team effort of another 3 on the last end to secure a comfortable win. The final game of the night was the Rinks with Cheryl, Dai, John and Mark. This time it was the home side who took the first end with 1. However East Williamston were struggling to get to the jack giving the visitors the opportunity to take 1 on the second, 2 on the third and 1 on the fourth. With the game starting to run away from them East Williamston were determined to turn things around, which they did, pulling it back with 3 on the fifth, 2 on the sixth and 3 on the last end to take the win. Playing Singles was Mark who dominated the game from the start, winning every end with 2 on the first, 2 on the second, 3 on the third, 2 on the fourth, 1 on the fifth, 1 on the sixth and 1 on the seventh end. Stephen Theresa and Mandy played Triples. Starting strongly with 3 on the first the visitors replied with 2 on the second. However a tremendous team effort on the third gave the home side all 6. Being first to the jack gave the home team the advantage as they took 1 on the fourth, 2 on the fifth and 2 on the sixth. Cosheston came back to take 3 on the final end but it wasn’t enough to close the gap and East Williamston took the win. Cliff and Fran played Pairs. East Williamston were hopeful, holding 2, but a great shot by the Cosheston skip saw their bowl curl in between the home bowls to land on the jack and take the win. In an open end the home team just needed to draw in with their last 4 shots but heavy and wide missed the mark and despite winning with the 1 shot it wasn’t enough and Cosheston took the win. Mark played singles and started very strongly, taking 2 on the first, 1 on the second, 4 on the third, 2 on the fourth, 1 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth. Penally came back to take 1 on the seventh, 1 on the eighth and 2 on the ninth. Another 4 to East Williamston, and with a thirteen shot lead, with two more ends to play, the game was already won. Penally took 2 on the eleventh but Mark sealed a commanding win, with another 4 on the final end. Cliff and Fran played Pairs and also had a good start, winning the first end with 3. The visitors took 1 on the second, but another 3 went to East Williamston on the third. Penally took 1 on the fourth but another 1 to the home side on the fifth and 2 on the sixth and the lead was extended to 7. East Williamston had a small wobble and weren’t getting to the jack as well as they had been and Penally took the next three ends with 3 shots. However, with the wobble over, East Williamston controlled the last three ends with 3 on the tenth, 2 on the eleventh and 2 on the final end to take the win. Dai, Theresa and Mandy played Triples and took the first end with 1. Penally took 1 on the second and 3 on the third and nudged into the lead. East Williamston took 2 more on the fourth but Penally replied with 2 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth. 2 more to the home side on the seventh and 1 to Penally on the eighth gave the visitors a 5 shot lead. The eighth end saw a great team effort and East Williamston pulled back 3 to close the gap to just two shots going into the final end. East Williamston’s first bowl ditched the jack with their second and third bowls sitting on the line to hold the three needed for the win. However Penally’s final bowl split the pack and stole shot to take the end and the win. Cheryl, Stephen, Steve and Phill P played Rinks and some great drawing shots by East Williamston’s new players landed 4 on the first end and 1 on the second. Penally took 1 on the third but, again, some great drawing shots secured 3 on the fourth, 2 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth. Penally broke up the East Williamston pack to take 1 on the seventh but 2 more to the home side pushed the game out of Penally’s reach, despite the 2 they secured on the final end. Playing on two mats, first up was Mark in the Singles. The visitors struck first taking 1 on the first end but Mark instantly replied with 4 on the second and 1 on the third. St Johns pinched 1 back on the fourth but another 4 to the home side on the fifth and the gap had widened to 7. St John’s didn’t give up and took another 1 on the sixth but with another 3 to East Williamston on the final end the game was won. Sharon and Fran played Pairs and set off strongly with 3 on the first end. St John’s pulled 1 back on the second but another 1 on the third and 1 on the fourth to the home side and the gap was starting to widen. However St John’s were not done and pulled another 1 back on the fifth. With the finishing line in sight disaster happened for the home team. St John’s had surrounded the jack and whilst trying to take the jack back, to the awaiting three home bowls, the shot skimmed past the jack giving the visitors 4. Going into the final end St John’s had one shot advantage and were holding. East Williamston tried to promote their bowl to the jack but it didn’t work and St John’s had the 1 and the win. Up next were Paula, Cliff and Phill E in the Triples. St John’s took 1 on the first but East Williamston took 2 on the second and 2 on the third. 1 more to the visitors on the fourth but a great team performance on the fifth gave 4 to the home side. Mark played singles and made a solid start, taking 4 on the first end. Hook replied with 3 on the second and 2 on the third. Mark took another 3 on the fourth but Hook were now commanding play and took the next seven ends with 14 shots. Mark finished the game with 3 on the last end but the gap was too wide to close and Hook took the win. Mandy and Fran played Pairs and also started well, with 3 on the first end. Hook came back with 2 on the second but the home side rallied again, taking 3 on the third, 1 on the fourth, 3 on the fifth and 2 on the sixth. East Williamston started the seventh end with a 10 shot lead but Hook were now used to the mat and their lead player was drawing to the jack more consistently and, in doing so, started to chip away at the home sides advantage, taking 1 on the seventh, 1 on the eighth, 3 on the ninth, 1 on the tenth and 3 on the eleventh. Going into the final end Hook were one shot behind and were looking to get two for the win. They were holding two but East Williamston’s final bowl curled in to cut the visitors down to 1 and they had to settle for the draw. Kym, Cliff and Sharon played Triples. The visitors struck first, taking 1 on the first and 1 on the second. East Williamston replied with 2 on the third and 1 on the fourth, to creep into the lead. Hook were successfully surrounding the jack and took 4 on the fifth. Another 1 to the home side on the sixth but disaster struck, for the home team, on the seventh end as, with very few bowls on the mat, Hook were holding six. East Williamston tried to break up the pack but unfortunately it didn't quite land and Hook doubled their score, adding a further 3 on the eighth. East Williamston did not give up, successfully taking 1 on the ninth and 1 on the final end but the seventh end had proved the decider. Dai, Stephen, Steve and Phill P played Rinks and with some great drawing shots, took 1 on the first end. Hook instantly replied with 4 on the second and 2 on the third. The home side took 2 on the fourth to narrow the gap, but another 2 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth extended Hooks lead further. Despite the visitors exerting heavy pressure on the home side, East Williamston played a good drawing game, and with bowls flying in all directions Hook could not disrupt things. East Williamston took another 2 on the seventh, 1 on the sixth and 1 on the final end, closing the gap, but just finishing short of taking the points. Despite the overall result, all games were played really well by everyone and East Williamston never gave up. Mark played Singles and having had a couple of wayward bowls his last one landed perfectly to take the first end. He took another 1 on the second but Lamphey came back to take 1 on the third. Mark now had the measure of the mat and played strongly taking 2 on the fourth, 4 on the fifth, 3 on the sixth and 1 on the final end to take a commanding win. Next up were Sharon and Fran in the Pairs who were holding, on the first end, until their last bowl just nudged the bowl and the jack rolled back to the awaiting Lamphey bowls to give the home team 2. East Williamston regrouped and took 2 back on the second but as the hall warmed up the fast mat just got even faster and things just weren’t going the way of East Williamston as Lamphey successfully pinched the next three ends with 1 shot each and 2 shots on the sixth end. The last end finally favoured East Williamston who were holding 1 on the ditch line when their last bowl neatly came down to remove the Lamphey bowl to take 2 but unfortunately it was too late to catch the home side who took the win. Playing Triples were Paula, John and Cliff but as East Williamston again struggled to gauge the mat the home side took 1 on the first and 2 on the second. However slowly but surely the visitors managed to pip the home team to the jack, to take 1 on the third, 1 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth to level the scores. Lamphey pulled 1 back on the sixth but a team effort on the final end gave 3 to East Williamston and the win. The final game of the night was the Rinks, played by Stephen, Theresa, Mandy and Phill P. The home side took 1 on the first but, despite a very testing mat, East Williamston instantly replied with 3 on the second, 1 on the third and 1 on the fourth. Lamphey took 1 on the fifth but another 3 for East Williamston on the sixth and 1 on the seventh gave them a solid win. Following trials in August and one squad practice this was Wales first ever all Ladies Short Mat Bowls squad, facing Ireland, England and Scotland, all of whom have had Ladies teams for some time. The squad was split into two groups, Championship (Singles, Pairs, Triples and Rinks) and International (4 Rinks Teams). Mandy played in the Championship Pairs and Fran played no. 3 in the International Rinks. Two long days of bowls were played and for their first time out the Wales squad dis very well, achieving Runner up in the Championship Rinks and the International Rinks finished 3rd overall. Well done both 👍🏻 Our second match of the week was at home against Badgers in the South Pembs Friendly League.
Playing on two mats up first was Mark in the Singles who, having lost the first end by 1 shot, came back with a vengeance with 2 on the second, 4 on the third, 4 on the fourth, 4 on the fifth and 4 on the sixth. Badgers took 2 on the final end but with a gap of 15 Mark took a strong win. Theresa and Fran played Pairs and lost the first end by 1 but took 4 on the second. Despite East Williamston holding shot, Badgers were good at squeezing into gaps and in doing so took 2 on the third and 2 on the fourth. The home side pulled back 3 on the fifth but Badgers cane straight back with 2 on the sixth to level the scores. It was all to play for on the final end. East Williamston were holding shot but this time Badgers could not find the gaps and with the final bowl East Williamston drew in to take 2 and the win. With one player injured and another held up at work, East Williamston had to have names drawn out of the hat to cover. Playing in the Triples were Theresa, Steve and Kym. East Williamston got off to a shaky start losing 3 over the first two ends but instantly regrouped to take 1 on the third and 2 on the fourth to level up the scores. 1 more to Badgers on the fifth but East Williamston had two tremendous ends taking 3 on the sixth and 3 on the final end to take the win. Mark, Dai, John and Phill E played Rinks and this was to be Dai’s first ever match. The foursome played really well as a team, surrounding the jack and blocking up at every opportunity with Badgers unable to get near. East Williamston dominated from start to finish with 2 on the first, 4 on the second, 5 on the third, 6 on the fourth, 6 on the fifth, 2 on the sixth and 4 on the last end with Badgers unable to get on the scoreboard.
