East Williamston were on the road again for tonight’s Pembs Main League match against Tabernacle.
Playing on two mats, up first was Mark in the Singles and Phill E and Phill P in the Pairs. Mark, in the Singles, was trying to gauge the mat but the home team, on familiar territory, took the early advantage with 3 in the first and 2 in the third. Mark picked up 1 in the second and 1 in the fourth but by the fifth end Taberncle already had a 6 shot lead. The home side dominated and despite Mark holding shot bowl, somehow, Tabernacle kept pinching the ends. By the seventh end Tabernacle had amassed a 10 shot lead and the game seemed to be slipping away from Mark. However Mark pulled back 2 on the eighth, 4 on the ninth and 1 on the tenth shortening the gap between the two sides. It looked like it was going to be an exciting finale but Tabernacle exerted more pressure, taking the last two ends with 4 shots on each, giving them a solid win. The two Phill’s played Pairs and also took a while getting used to the mat. Again Tabernacle took the home advantage with 4 on the first, 1 on the second and 1 on the third. East Williamston pulled back 3 on the fourth but Tabernacle just replied with another 3 on the fifth. A solid performance and a lovely curling bowl in by Phill, on the sixth end, gave East Williamston 4, followed by 1 on the seventh and the gap between the two sides was narrowed back to just 1 point. Three more ends went to Taberncle and the gap was back to 7. A valiant attempt gave the visitors the last two ends but they were unable to close the gap and Tabernacle took the points. Kym, Mark and Fran played Triples and it looked as though they were going to suffer the same fate, as Tabernacle took the first two ends. Kym was playing some great shots to the jack and, by the third end, East Williamston were better predicting the mats nuances and took 2 shots. On the fourth end Tabernacle had surrounded the jack but with her last bowl of the end Fran did a lovely shot which connected perfectly, springing the jack out to East Williamston’s awaiting back bowls and a nice 4 shots on the scoreboard. For the first time tonight East Williamston were in the lead! Despite Tabernacle pulling a couple of ends back, East Williamston were successful at cutting their numbers down. On the eighth end another great bowl got 4 shots for East Williamston and with a further 3 on the ninth it meant that the home side were not going to be able to close the gap, despite them winning the final end. Brenda, Steve, Mandy and Sharon played Rinks on the same tricky mat that Mark had played in the singles. Tabernacle took the first two ends, and a 5 shot lead, as East Williamston struggled to judge their shot weight and length. A couple of lovely shots by Brenda and Steve helped East Williamston get their first end on the scoreboard. By the fifth end East Williamston had closed the gap to just 3 shots, but a disappointing sixth end gave Tabernacle a 6 shot win. East Williamston refocused and some nice bowls, played by Mandy and Sharon, gave the visitors wins on the last 3 ends. Despite their efforts though East Williamston were unable to close the gap caused by that sixth end. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 2 - 6 on points and 41 - 54 on shots Singles Loss 9 - 20 Pairs Loss 11 - 15 Triples Win 14 - 7 Rinks Loss 7 - 12

East Williamston were away for tonight’s South Pembs Friendly League match against Cosheston. This match had been postponed from earlier in the month.
Playing on two mats first up was Mark in the Singles and Theresa and Phill P in the Pairs. Mark soon realised that the mat had tactics of its own, which the home side took advantage of, taking 2 shots on the first end. Mark came back in the second but with bowls not landing where they were intended the home side took the third and fourth and had a 5 shot lead. Mark picked up the fifth and sixth to reduce the gap but Cosheston took 2 on the final end, extending their lead and taking the win. Theresa and Phill P played pairs. Having lost the first end, they came back with 2 on the second and 1 on the third. Cosheston fought back, with 1 on the fourth, but East Williamston replied with 2 on the fifth, and a 3 shot advantage. Cosheston were not going to take it lying down, taking 1 on the sixth and 1 on the final end, but the East Williamston cushion held firm, giving the visitors a narrow 1 point advantage and the win. Next up were Brenda, Gwyneth and Mandy in the Threes, playing on the same troublesome mat as Mark had. Again the home side used the advantage and took 3 on the first end. East Williamston retaliated winning 3 on the second and by the fourth end things were tied 4 all. East Williamston were now more consistent with some neat bowling which gave them wins on the fourth, fifth and sixth ends and a 3 shot advantage. As had happened in the Pairs, Cosheston rallied to take 2 on the final end but the narrow margin that East Williamston had built gave them a 1 shot lead and the win. Phill P, Steve, Sharon and Fran played Rinks and started well taking 2 on the first end. Cosheston somehow kept managing to pinch the ends, taking the second, third and fourth but with only a 1 shot advantage. East Williamston got 2 on the fifth and were holding the sixth end with Steve’s beautifully placed shot but, again, Cosheston managed to nudge their way in to take the end. All tied after the sixth it was going to be down to the wire on the last end. Despite trying to get a bowl at the back of the jack (and failing with 6 bowls) East Williamston were holding 1 shot as Cosheston lined up with their last bowl. This time they couldn’t pinch it and East Williamston took the end and another narrow win. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 6 - 4 on Points with 20 - 22 on shots (narrowly missing out on the two bonus points for most shots) Singles Loss 3 - 8 Pairs Win 5 - 4 Threes Win 7 - 6 Rinks Win 5 - 4 Some very close matches but all played with great spirit. Well done to all. East Williamston were home for tonights South Pembs Friendly League match against Reynalton and playing on just one mat it was going to be a long evening.
Phill P was up first to play Singles and soon realised that the mat was running very fast and dropped the first end. He pulled it back on the second with two shots but Reynalton rallied and took the next two ends. By the fourth end Reynalton were narrowly ahead but then Phill played a superb fifth end, taking all 4 shots. Phill continued the pressure and took the last two ends as well as the win. Mandy and Chris played Pairs and got off to a good start winning the first end. Reynalton came back on the second but some lovely bowling gave East Williamston 4 shots on the third and 4 on the fourth, stretching their lead to nine shots. Reynalton couldnt get to grips with the mat and the home side took advantage, taking five of the seven ends and the win. Gwyneth, Phill E and Mark played Triples. Again the mat was proving troublesome to Reynalton and East Williamston had a really strong start, taking the first three ends and an 8 shot lead. The visitors took the fourth but East Williamston came back strongly with 4 on the fifth and 4 on the final end and took a commanding win. Theresa, Steve, Sharon and Fran played Rinks and quickly realised the speed of the mat. Bowls, from both sides, were going in all directions, but thankfully the home team managed to get the nearest and took end after end. On the final end Reynalton had the jack wedged between two bowls on the line. East Williamston had hoped to get a clean sheet, and whilst they managed to move one of the Reynalton bowls, they held onto 1 and were delighted to finally get on the scoreboard. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 10 - 0 on points and 51 - 11 on shots Singles Win 9 - 4 Pairs Win 15 - 3 Triples Win 16 - 3 Rinks Win 11 - 1 East Williamston travelled to Letterston for tonight’s Main league fixture.
Mark played singles and soon realised how tricky the Letterston mats were going to be. The home team played some consistent shots, taking the first five ends. Mark then had a change of luck, taking the next four ends and closing the gap to 3 shots. By the eleventh end there were just 2 shots in it but Letterston grabbed all 4 shots on the final end and took the win. Phill P and Fran played Pairs and got off to a solid start, winning the first three ends. But East Williamston were struggling to get to the jack and Letterston seized the opportunity to surround it. All East Williamston could do was try and cut down the number of shots being held. East Williamston took the seventh to equalise but struggled over the next four ends whilst Letterston just widened the gap. As a consolation East Williamston took the last end but lost the game. Next up were Brenda, Kym and Phill E in the Triples. Again East Williamston looked confident, taking the first two ends, but yet again Letterston came back and by the fifth end both sides were level. However Letterston were just better at surrounding the jack and despite some good shots East Williamston couldn’t break them down and failed to win another end. Last up were Gwyneth, Cliff, Mandy and Sharon in the Rinks. The first end saw the team realising how fast the mat was, but they had it sussed by the second and were on the scoreboard. It proved to be a very close battle with each team taking alternate ends and by the fifth East Williamston were 1 shot ahead. But, as with all the other games, Letterston turned up the pressure and started to take the lead. Despite some good bowls East Williamston just couldnt win the ends, losing the final four ends and the game. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 0 - 8 on points, 25 - 54 on shots Singles Loss 8 - 14 Pairs Loss 7 - 15 Triples Loss 4 - 13 Rinks Loss 6 - 12 East Williamston were home for tonights Friendly League match v Skrinkle, which had been postponed from 3rd November.
Playing on just one mat, Mark was first up in the Singles. A shaky start saw Skrinkle take the first end. However Mark came back strongly with 4 on the second and 3 on the third. The opposition was rattled as Mark won end after end, often by 3 shots. There was no reply from Skrinkle as they failed to win another end and Mark took a substantial win. Sharon and Fran played Pairs and got off to a strong start with 3 shots on the first and 3 on the second. Skrinkle struggled to get to grips with the mat, which was playing very fast, and by the fourth end East Williamston had a comfortable 9 shot lead. A wobble on the fifth end gave Skrinkle their first win and 3 shots on the scoreboard. A beautiful bowl to the line gave East Williamston the sixth and despite Skrinkle grabbing the final end, the gap was too wide for them to catch up. Heather, Mandy and Theresa played Triples and were caught out by the speed of the mat on the first end. They came back in the second and third ends but it remained a close game with only two shots between the two sides. By the fifth end East Williamston started to take control, winning 2 and a further 2 on the sixth. On the final end it looked as though Skrinkle were holding, but with her final bowl of the game Theresa bowled a beauty to the jack and sealed the win. Final game of the night saw Paula, Kym, Cliff and Phill P in the Rinks. East Williamston got off to a good start taking the first four ends and a 4 shot advantage. However East Williamston hit a dry spell and struggled to get a bowl on the mat, with long, short and wide shots. Skrinkle took advantage and by the fifth end were level. As the teams entered the final end Skrinkle were 1 shot ahead and East Williamston knew they needed at least 1 for a draw. Skrinkle were holding 3 and Phill knew he needed to get into the mix. His first bowl connected with the jack but sadly kept on rolling. For his final shot he took aim to try and clear the opposing bowls, he successfully connected and cut them down to one but couldn’t rescue the end or the game. Overall Result: Win to East Williamston 8 - 2 on points, 37 - 15 on shots Singles Win 15 - 1 Pairs Win 10 - 5 Triples Win 8 - 3 Rinks Loss 4 - 6 East Williamston were home for tonights Pembs Main League match against The Meads. Captain Sharon gave a positive team talk prior to the match, reminding everybody how well they have been playing recently and to believe that, despite this being a tough fixture against Welsh Intl players, we can do well.
Mark played singles, winning the first end. However The Meads came back strong, winning the next three ends with 8 shots. Mark stayed calm and refocused, taking the next four ends with 1 shot per end. Over the next three ends the score ping-ponged wins alternatively and at the end of the eleventh end The Meads were 4 shots ahead. Mark knew he had to play his best final end of the night, which he did and took all 4 shots which tied the game and gave East Williamston their first point of the night. Sharon and Fran played in The Pairs. The Meads made a strong start, taking 3 on the first end and 4 on the third. However East Williamston pulled back 1 on the second and 3 on the fourth. The Meads took the fifth and sixth ends with another 3 shots. Sharon and Fran replied with some great bowling and won the next four ends. By the tenth end East Williamston were leading by 3 shots but The Meads turned up the pressure on the final two ends and pinched the game by just 3 shots. Gwyneth, Theresa and Cliff played Triples and played a very close game throughout. The Meads took the first with 2 and the third with 2, East Williamston took the second with 3 and the fourth with 4! It was nail bitingly close but by the seventh end East Williamston had crept into the lead by 2. The Meads levelled again on the eighth but East Williamston took another 2 on the ninth. As with the Singles match, it was all down to the last end. East Williamston were holding but with the last bowl of the game The Meads looked to have pinched it. A measure was called for and The Meads had two which gave them a draw. Rinks was played by Kym, Steve, Mark and Phlll P. East Williamston played some really good bowls and did well to surround the jack, however The Meads were well practiced in splitting the pack and taking the ends. End after end it looked as though East Williamston would take the shots but for five ends this proved not to be the case. East Williamston rallied and took ends six and seven but by this time The Meads were already 7 shots ahead. The eighth end went to The Meads but East Williamston defiantly took the final end, but had been unable to close the gap. Overall Result: Loss to East Williamston 2 - 6 on points, 41 - 50 on shots Singles Draw 10 - 10 Pairs Loss 13 - 16 Triples Draw 12 - 12 Rinks Loss 6 - 12 Congratulations to all who played tonight. We certainly put up a good fight and had some very close games against some very good players. East Williamston were away for tonights Main League match v Tavernspite and everyone knew it was going to be tough.
First up was Phill E, in the singles, and he soon realised it was going to be a battle. Tavernspite took the first six ends, by which point they were 15 shots ahead. Phill pulled 2 back on the seventh but Tavernspite just turned up the heat with big wins in the ninth and tenth ends. Phill took 1 in the eleventh but the gap was too wide with 22 shots between the two sides. We had high hopes for Mark and Chris in the Pairs however they struggled to get to grips with the mat and Tavernspite took advantage, as well as the first four ends. Tavernspite won a string of ends by three shots each and their score just kept going up and up. East Williamston won only two ends of the match and took a painful defeat. Cliff, Theresa and Phill P played Triples but again Tavernspite were very good at surrounding the jack and winning ends. By the ninth end East Williamston were losing hope and just wanted to get something on the scoreboard. Fortunately their prayers were answered and they took the final end. Kym, Sharon, Mandy and Fran played Rinks and knew they faced a challenge. However they started well and took the first three ends, helped by Kym who had a phenomenal game, playing lead, and getting some great shots in on the jack. Tavernspite were never going to sit back and came back with 3 shots on the fourth. A tied end on the fifth and two more shots for East Williamston on the sixth, things were looking hopeful. Tavernspite came back again taking the seventh and by the eighth were two shots ahead. It was all down to the last end. Tavernspite had three surrounding the jack but Fran had the last bowl of the game. The room fell silent as the shot was taken. It struck perfectly and the Tavernspite bowls scattered. East Williamston definitely had 1 and a measure was called for 2nd. Breaths were held but delight followed as East Williamston had the 2nd which gave them the draw and one very rare (our first ever) away point against Tavernspite. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 1 - 7 on points and 13 - 80 on shots Singles Loss 25 - 3 Pairs Loss 30 - 2 Triples Loss 18 - 1 Rinks Draw 7 - 7 Well done to everyone who played, it was always going to be a difficult match against the League leaders. Due to a couple of injuries, it was a depleted team of 8 who travelled for tonight’s Main League fixture, away to Hook.
Mark knew he had a tough game, in the Singles, as he faced the current World Champion, Andrew Hudson. Hook got off to a strong start, with 3 on the first end but Mark replied with 2 on the second. However, despite Mark playing some excellent shots, the Champion dominated with Mark only winning three of the twelve ends and a hefty defeat. Mandy and Fran played Pairs. Despite Hook taking the first two ends East Williamston pulled the next two ends back and some closely fought ends ensued, with East Williamston doing well in cutting down the Hook shots. East Williamston were unlucky where, on a couple of ends, it looked as though they had pinched the win, but after very close measures the home side were the victors. East Williamston stayed in contention until the seventh end when Hook took 3, followed by a further 3 on the tenth which pushed the game too far for East Williamston to catch up. Kym, Cliff and Mandy played Triples with a positive start, winning the first end. However Hook were superior at surrounding the jack, taking a 5 shot win on the third end. East Williamston were playing a little short, unable to break up the Hook bowls and it was the seventh end before they could get on the score sheet, by which time Hook already had an 8 shot advantage. East Williamston secured the ninth and tenth ends but the gap was too wide to close. Gwyneth, Steve, Mark and Phill P played Rinks and with a solid team performance took 6 on the first end. For the next 4 ends Hook were playing catch up and were 1 shot ahead by the fifth end. However East Williamston pulled another coup on the sixth with a cheeky 5 shot win. Taking also the seventh and ninth ends Hook could not catch them and East Williamston were delighted to take the two points. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 2 - 6 on points and 27 - 50 on shots Singles Loss 5 - 17 Pairs Loss 5 - 13 Triples Loss 4 - 12 Rinks Win 13 - 8 It was always going to be a difficult match but a superb result for us to take the 2 points at an away game and some really good bowls played by all. Well done. |
