Our second game of the week was a Pembs Main League match, at home, against Tabernacle.
Mark playing Singles started confidently taking 2 on the first end and 3 on the second. The visitors were struggling to get to grips with the swing of our mat and Mark took advantage with 4 on the third, 3 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth. Entering the sixth end Mark was holding a 13 shot lead. However Tabernacle managed to pull inside Marks bowl to pinch 2 and another 2 on the seventh. The gap had narrowed to 9 but Mark quickly pulled away again taking all of the remaining ends and a further 11 shots. Winning the game with a 20 shot lead. Sharon and Fran played Pairs and won 2 on the first end. Tabernacle crept a bowl in to take 1 on the second but the home team were playing well, with Sharon doing some lovely drawing shots, landing on the jack and Fran pinching the ends for East Williamston whenever Tabernacle managed to sneak past Sharons bowl to get to the jack. This team work paid dividends as East Williamston took the next six ends with a further 9 shots, giving the home side a 10 shot lead by the end of the eighth end. Tabernacle were, again, really struggling with the mat, but pulled 1 back on the ninth. 2 more to East Williamston on the tenth and 1 to Tabernacle on the Eleventh. However it was a lovely final end as Sharon drew two bowls to the jack, closely followed by Fran and with no reply from the visitors the home team took 4 and the win. Gwyneth, Theresa and Phill E played Triples and took 1 on the first. Tabernacle were holding on the second, but Theresa did a lovely shot which curled perfectly to nestle inside the away bowl and onto the jack giving the home side another 1. Tabernacle put up a good fight though, winning 2 on the third and levelling the scores. 1 to East Williamston on the fourth, followed by 1 to Tabernacle on the fifth and the game was closely balanced. East Williamston played some nice bowls but the Tabernacle skip was a good disrupter and pinched 1 on the sixth and 1 on the seventh. Suddenly the visitors had got the lead. However the home side pulled it back winning 2 on the eighth and 1 on the ninth. With a 1 shot lead it was going to be an important last end. Tabernacle were holding but a few nudges and the East Williamston bowl rolled in to take 1 shot and the win. Steve, Kym, Mandy and Phill P played Rinks and quickly took 1 on the first. On the second Phill did a lovely shot into the jack but a strike from Tabernacle pinched the end. The third end was a great team effort with Steve drawing to the jack, closely followed by Kym also drawing to the jack and finished with Phill taking out two Tabernacle bowls to give East Williamston 4. Tabernacle pulled back 3 on the fourth to put them just 1 shot behind and were holding on the fifth but Mandy did a great strike, taking the jack back away from the visitors bowls and winning 1 shot. Another 1 to the home side on the sixth followed by another team effort on the seventh with Steve getting both of his bowls to the jack, followed by Kym getting to the jack and then Mandy adding her two bowls to the pile. Tabernacle knocked one bowl out but Phill then blocked them off nicely to secure the 4 for East Williamston. On the final end Mandy did a great wide shot to pinch the jack but Tabernacle somehow managed to sneak in to take 2 however by this time the gap was too wide for them to close, giving East Williamston the win. East Williamston were away for tonights South Pembs Friendly League match against Reynalton.
Playing on one mat, up first was Mark in the Singles. Getting off to a good start Mark took 1 on the first, 1 on the second and a very comfortable 4 on the third. Reynalton pulled 1 back on the fourth, but Mark took the next end with 2 and a 7 shot advantage. However Reynalton were getting back into the game and bowling much better, taking 3 on the sixth. The home side took another 1 on the last end but the gap was too wide and East Williamston claimed the win. Playing next, in the Pairs, were Mandy and Fran. This time it was the home side who took the lead taking 1 on the first, the second and the third ends, as the visitors struggled to gauge the mat. Reynalton were holding a pack around the jack in the fourth end, however a weighted shot by Fran split the pack and sent the Jack back to Mandys waiting bowls and East Williamston took 3. Having now sussed the mat East Williamston were playing more consistently and took 1 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth. With a slim 2 shot lead it was all down to the last end. Reynalton managed to trickle a ball inside Mandys to take 1, but it wasn’t enough to take the game. Paula, Cliff and Sharon played Triples and took a 3 shot loss in the first end. The home side were very good at surrounding the jack and East Williamston just could not gauge the mat. Reynalton kept up the pressure taking end after end and East Williamston struggled to reply. On the final end Paula did a great shot to the jack with her first bowl, then again with the second. Could the visitors get onto the score board? Unfortunately, Reynalton managed to disrupt things again and took the end and the win. . Steve, Brenda, Theresa and Phill played Rinks and had been warned of the mat’s peculiarities and challenged, by the team, to close the shots deficit for the night. Reynalton took the first end with 2 but East Williamston had learned the lessons of the night and quickly came back, taking 3 on the second and 2 on the third. Brenda did a perfect shot to the jack, on the fourth, and despite their best efforts, Reynalton failed to disrupt it. Another 1 to East Williamston on the fifth and the lead stood at 5 shots. On the sixth end it was Steves turn to do a lovely shot to the jack and, again, Reynalton could not alter things. Going into the final end East Williamston needed to get 5 in order to have the highest shots for the night (and 2 valuable bonus points). Again, Steve did a great shot to the jack and for a while a small wall of bowls was forming with neither team getting any nearer to the jack. Reynalton nudged an away bowl in and a wick gave East Williamston 3 for the win, but sadly 2 shots short for the bonus points. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 6 - 4 on Points, 24 - 25 on shots Singles Win 8 - 5 Pairs Win 5 - 4 Triples Loss 0 - 14 Rinks Win 11 - 2 East Williamston were away for tonight’s Pembs Main League match against Hook.

Mark pulled 2 back on the fourth but the fifth and sixth fell to Hook with another 4 shots. The gap had now widened to a 7 shot lead, however Mark pulled another 2 back on the seventh. 1 more to Hook on the eighth and 1 to Mark on the ninth and with the gap now back at 5, Mark was still in touch. However Hook just turned up the pressure, taking 2 on the tenth, 1 on the eleventh and 4 on the final end gave Hook a strong win. Cliff and Phill P played Pairs. Cliff did two lovely shots to the jack and East Williamston had 2 on the first. Hook came back strongly on the second, winning 4, followed by another 1 on the third. Another draw in by Cliff gave the visitors 1 on the fourth, closely followed by Phill doing a lovely shot to take 1 on the fifth and another 1 on the sixth. Half way through and the game was level. However, as with the Singles, Hook turned up the heat in the second half of the match, taking 7 shots over the next 5 ends. East Williamston took 1 on the last end but the gap was too wide to catch up. Steve, Kym and Phill E played Triples. Hook took an early lead with 4 on the first end. Kym did a lovely shot to secure 1 on the second however the fourth and fifth fell to the home team. A nice knock in and the visitors took 1 on the fifth. Hook had a lead of 4 shots as they went into the sixth. However, as with the other games the pressure came in the second half with Hook winning all remaining ends, with a further 10 shots to secure the win. Gwyneth, Sharon, Mandy and Fran played Rinks and Hook were dominant from the start. Even on ends where the Visitors managed to be holding Hook just outplayed them and took the ends. Hook were very good at surrounding the jack and East Williamston just couldn’t break through and when a good shot was bowled the result did not go East Williamstons way. Hook took all ends consistently and a resounding win. Overall Result Loss to East Williamston 0 - 8 on points and 13 - 65 on shots Singles Loss 5 - 17 Pairs Loss 6 - 12 Triples Loss 2 - 16 Rinks Loss 0 - 20 Despite the team playing some good bowls it was a tough defeat. On the fifth and sixth ends Cosheston were holding but on each end they were unfortunate, knocking the East Williamson bowl in, and giving the home side another two ends and 2 shots. Two more shots on the final end gave the home side a clean sweep, having won all 7 ends, and the win. Paula, Kym and Sharon played Triples. Cosheston snook in to take 1 on the first end but a lovely bowl from Paula gave East Williamston 1 on the second. The home side pulled together nicely as a team with Paula drawing to the jack, Kym following her and Sharon bowling a lovely weighted shot to get the home side 3 on the third. After a measure East Williamston took 2 on the fourth and 2 on the fifth. The team came together again on the sixth end and pushed the game out of Coshestons reach with a further 4 shots. Going into the final end Cosheston were delighted to get 2 but the gap was too wide for them to close. Brenda, Theresa, Cliff and Phill played Rinks. The home team won the first end with 2 shots. Cosheston pulled 1 back on the fourth but Theresa and Cliff tucked in two cheeky bowls to get a further 2 on the fifth. Cosheston were trying hard and successfully held the home side to just 1 on the sixth. With an 8 shot lead East Williamston knew they needed to hold firm for the last end. Another nice shot from Brenda, followed again by Theresa saw the jack being nudged towards the back right corner. Cliff added to the haul and despite Cosheston doing their best to disrupt things, Phill curled his last two bowls nicely to the awaiting East Williamston pack, to take 5 and the win. On the sixth end Skrinkle were holding about 4 but Phill clipped the pack and cut them back to just 1 shot. Going into the last end Theresa told Phill that they needed all six to get the draw. Unfortunately just 3 held shot but it was a valiant effort to close the gap. Paula, Cliff and Chris played Triples. Skrinkle started confidently, taking 4 on the first end. Paula did some great shots to the jack, but a couple of heavy shots knocked them away and the home side took 1 on the second and 1 on the third. On the fourth end Paula’s bowl did not get moved and East Williamston took 1 back. With just a 5 shot lead it was all to play for but the fifth end gave Skrinkle 5 and suddenly the gap leapt to 10. East Williamston pulled 1 back on the sixth and were holding with a toucher on the seventh but Skrinkles last bowl drew in and also touched, and whilst the end was tied the game was won by Skrinkle. Last up were Kym, Sharon, Mandy and Fran in the Rinks. East Williamston got off to a shaky start as Skrinkle took the first three ends and 4 shots. However the visitors were now better gauging their weight and a tremendous team effort got them 5 on the fourth end and into the lead. Kym did some lovely lead shots to the jack, closely followed by Sharon, who put some beauties on the jack. East Williamston won 3 on the fifth. Skrinkle were holding on the sixth but Mandy tucked a couple right behind the jack and Fran closed the jack in at the front for another 3 on the sixth. Letterston pulled 1 back on the tenth but another 2 went to East Williamston on the eleventh end. With just 2 shots separating the scores it was all down to the final end. Mandy played two lovely shots to the jack, which Letterston couldn’t better. Fran just needed to draw in, which she did with both bowls to take 4 and the win. Cliff, Mandy and Phill E played Triples. Letterston were confident and took 8 shots on the first three ends. East Williamston came back with 1 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth. The sixth end went to Letterston but Cliff bowled a couple of beauties to the jack to win the seventh end. One more went to Letterston on the eighth and with a 6 shot deficit the visitors knew they were running out of ends to close the gap. However another two great bowls from Cliff, one from Mandy and one from Phill gave the visitors 4 on the ninth and the deficit was down to just 2. It was another important final end. Cliff landed just short and Mandy just long. Phill needed to draw in to try and get 2 or more. As his bowl rolled through it just nicked the jack but his bowl didnt stop. It was definitely 1 to East Williamston with Mandy fairly sure Letterston had second. A measure was called and by millimetres East Williamston had second and after a tremendous come back they got the draw and 1 valuable point. Brenda, Kym, Mark and Phill P played Rinks. As with the other matches Letterston made the most of the home mat advantage, winning 1 on the first and 2 on the second. Brenda did a lovely backhand bowl to the jack and East Williamston pulled 1 back on the third, but the home side took another 1 on the fourth. However Letterston buried the jack on the sixth end, taking 5 shots which was closely followed by another 2 on the seventh. On the eighth end East Williamston had 3 touchers in the ditch and the jack stood out wide. If East Williamston could push the jack back they could get 4. Phill lined up his first bowl which just went wide. He sent his second which looked on target but the bowling gods were against us as the jack didn’t go back, instead it popped sideways to the waiting Letterston bowl. Such bad luck for the visitors. However with 1 shot the last end went to East Williamston, but the 9 shot gap couldn’t be closed.
