East Williamston were away for tonights Friendly League match against Hundleton and arrived recalling the strange habits of the Hundleton mat from last seasons game… would it strike again tonight?!
Playing on one mat, first up was Mark in the singles. Mark got off to a confident start, which continued throughout the match, winning 5 of the 7 ends and a resounding overall win. Mandy and Fran played pairs and soon discovered the peculiar nuances of the mat, where bowls simply would not turn. The home side took the advantage and despite some close finishes East Williamston couldn’t take the ends, being a tied end on the third and winning only once on the fifth. Hundleton took the win. Up next were Cliff, Theresa and Phill E in the Triples who also got off to a good start, winning the first two ends. But after that Hundleton successfully surrounded the jack and took the remaining five ends and the win. Mandy, Kim, Phill P and Chris played Rinks and, having watched the previous three games, now had an idea how the mat ran. Hundleton took the first end as East Williamston gauged play, but then East Williamston took the second. Hundleton fought back and were two shots ahead by the third end. East Williamston were now being more precise with their shots and started to rack up the shot wins on each end, taking 10 shots over the last four ends and the win. Whilst the games were tied, two apiece, the shot difference gave East Williamston the bonus points and the overall win. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 6 - 4 on points with 24 - 18 on shots Singles Win 9 - 2 Pairs Loss 2 - 7 Threes Loss 2 - 6 Rinks Win 11 - 3 A good win under difficult mat conditions, where the type of bowl used dictated how good (or not) the shot could be.

East Williamston, with a somewhat depleted team, were at home for tonights Main League match against Tabernacle.
Mark played Singles and got off to a storming start, with 4 shots on the first end. This form continued through to the fifth end, by which point Mark was well ahead at 16-0. Tabernacle pulled 2 shots back on the sixth, but Mark just turned up the pressure again winning by 3 or 4 shots each end and by the ninth end there was a 22 shot advantage. Tabernacle got 4 more but Marks final end, with another 4 shot finish put the game well and truly to bed. Mandy and Fran played Pairs and also got off to a strong start, being 7-0 up after two ends but they hit a dry spell and Tabernacle were catching the jack and taking it away from East Williamston. By the seventh end there were only 2 shots difference and East Williamston needed to focus. They progressed steadily over the next couple of ends and with Fran’s cheeky rebound shot they pinched the last end with the last bowl of the game. Up next were Gwyneth, Mandy and Cliff in the Threes who got off to a slow start, with both sides tied 3-3 by the fourth end. Tabernacle took 4 on the fifth but the home side retaliated with 3 on the sixth. There was only 1 shot difference by the eighth end but East Williamston took 1 on the ninth and a strong finale of 5 on the last end and took the win. Brenda, Paula, Mark and Sharon played Rinks in the final game of the evening. Tabernacle took the lead but with 3 in reply on the fourth end, things were all tied by the fifth. However Tabernacle just managed to surround the jack and took the ends away from East Williamston and with 6 shots in the last two ends they also stole the game. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 6 - 2 on points and 61 - 34 on shots. Singles Win 28 - 6 Pairs Win 14 - 7 Threes Win 15 - 8 Rinks Loss. 4 - 13 A good result and some much needed points in this competitive league. It was East Williamston’s second home match of the week, this time against Lamphey, in the Friendly League.
Lamphey had asked if the Rinks game could be played early, so up first was Paula, Gwyneth, Mandy and Phill P. East Williamston got off to an excellent start and played a consistent game, winning the first 4 ends and leading by 5 shots. Lamphey really struggled to get to grips with our mat and their bowls were heading in all directions. Lead bowler Paula turned the heat up in the fifth end and consistently hit and surrounded the jack, making life even more difficult for Lamphey, and helping East Williamston to get a further 9 shots on the last 3 ends and taking a resounding win, having won all 7 ends. Back to the normal running order Mark played singles, and again, got off to a great start winning 4 shots on the first end. However Lamphey were not going to let East Williamston have it all their own way and levelled the scoreboard on the second end. It was a game of ‘anything you can do’ and the game was still tied by the fourth end. Mark grabbed 3 on the fifth end and started to edge ahead. Lamphey pulled 1 back on the sixth but Mark took all 4 shots on the final end to take a solid victory. Sharon and Fran played Pairs but got off to a slow start with Lamphey taking the first two ends. Sharon played some great shots to the jack but Lamphey just kept nudging ahead and were 4 shots to the good by the fifth end. The pair were worried the game was escaping them but came back and grabbed two on the sixth end. Coming into the final end the pair knew they needed at least two to draw. Sharon, again, bowled perfectly and nestled two bowls against the jack in the far corner. Lamphey, who had found our mats tricky all evening, struggled to get near. Knowing we had the two shots, and at least a draw, Fran bowled her three, which neatly nestled into Sharons bowls and the jack. Lamphey had the last bowl and both Sharon and Fran crossed their fingers, hoping that Lamphey’s last bowl would not mess things up… relief, it hit the block and East Williamston took the win. Last up were John, Cliff and Theresa in the Threes and they got off to a strong start, being 4 shots up by the fourth end. East Williamston had a tremendous fifth end, winning by 5 shots and, despite Lamphey winning 4 on the last two ends, East Williamston had pushed the gap too far for Lamphey to catch them. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 10 - 0 with 44 shots against 16 Singles Win 12 - 6 Pairs Win 8 - 5 Threes Win 10 - 5 Rinks Win 14 - 0 Congratulations to everybody who played tonight. Some really good bowling and a superb win. East Williamston were at home for tonight’s Main League game against Letterston.
Mark got off to a great start, in the Singles, winning 4 on the first end, and was leading 5-1 by the 3rd end. However Mark seemed to get an attack of the jitters and surprisingly lost the next 4 ends, by which time Letterston had the 5 shot advantage. Mark picked up the next 3 ends and by the 10th end they were tied. But Letterston took 4 in the last two ends to take the win. Phill P and Mandy were in the Pairs. It was a very close game with one shot difference between the two sides by the 9th end. East Williamston took the lead with 4 shots on the 10th end, giving them a 5 point cushion. Letterston pulled one back on the 11th, so East Williamston just needed a draw in to the jack on their last shot of the game to win. Unfortunately it just didn’t happen for them, giving Letterston 4 on the final end and a tied end result. Cliff, Kym and Phill E played Triples and again had a close match, being tied by the 4th end. However East Williamston maintained the pressure and secured the next 3 ends. Letterston took the 8th but East Williamston took 3 shots on the 9th and despite Letterston winning the final end the gap was just too wide for them to close. Brenda, Tracy, Sharon and Fran played Rinks but got off to a surprisingly slow start, losing the first 3 ends and 5 points behind. However East Williamston took 4 in the 4th and by the 7th end were 2 shots in the lead. Letterston squeezed through to take 2 on the 8th and by the last end East Williamston were 2 shots behind with Letterston holding the end with 2 shots and looking likely to take the win. The final bowl of the match was with Fran to nudge Brenda’s bowl closer, as well as getting her own bowl in, to try and get 2 for the draw. The hall fell scarily silent as Fran took the shot, which looked to be going wide, but took a little wick, nudged Brendas and landed next to it. A measure was asked for but East Williamston were delighted to have got the 2 shots which gave them the draw and points on the board. Overall Result : Draw. 4 - 4 on Points and 38 shots to Letterstons 39 Singles Loss 10 - 14 Pairs Draw 10 - 10 Threes Win 9 - 6 Rinks Draw 9 - 9 Well done to everyone, it was a closely fought battle and a good result overall. East Williamston were away for tonight’s match against The Meads and we knew it was going to be a tough night.
Mark played Singles and got off to a good start, taking the first two ends. But his opponent, a Welsh National player came back at him. Mark kept his composure and stayed ahead until the 7th end, but took some hefty losses in the last 4 ends and The Meads took the win. Phill E and Mandy played Pairs but really struggled to get to grips with the mat. Meads took advantage and were 14 shots ahead by the 6th end. There was a glimmer of hope as East Williamston secured 3 shots on the 7th end but Meads regrouped and inflicted a hefty defeat. Gwyneth, Cliff and Phill P played triples and got off to a positive start, winning the first end, East Williamston stayed close to the Meads who only had a 2 shot advantage by the 6th end. However the Meads won 5 on the 7th end which just pushed the game out of reach. Kym, Sharon, Fran and Chris played Rinks and were hoping the mat would not cause the same issues as it had in the pairs. Despite some good bowling, having two Welsh National players on the opposing side made it a real battle. For every good East Williamston shot the Meads could better it. East Williamston were unlucky on a couple of ends, with one tied and the other beaten only by millimetres. East Williamston only managed to take 2 of the 9 ends but managed to stop The Meads completely running away with the game. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 0 - 8 with 16 shots to their 61 Singles Loss 6 - 16 Pairs Loss 3 - 22 Triples Loss 5 - 13 Rinks Loss 2 - 10 It was a very wet and windy night for tonight’s fixture away to New Hedges.
First up was Phill P in the Singles, and what a start he had, playing confidently and taking the first three ends. However New Hedges fought back, taking the next four ends, and with Phill suddenly struggling to get the right length and weight, New Hedges secured the win. Theresa and Mandy played in the Pairs and also made a good start, taking 3 on the first end. They continued the pressure, winning six of the seven ends, and taking a resounding win. Gwyneth, John and Mark played the Triples and, again, led from the start. Taking the first 4 ends they were already nine shots ahead. New Hedges took three in the fifth, and we feared a comeback as they had done in the singles, but East Williamston hung on to their significant lead and took the game. Last up were Brenda, Tracey, Sharon and Fran in the Rinks. This time it was New Hedges who made a good start, winning the first two ends, but East Williamston outplayed them with some superb bowling, from all players, and winning five shots in the sixth end pushed the game out of New Hedges reach and another resounding win for East Williamston . Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 8-2 on points and 38-18 on shots. Singles Loss 6 - 9 Pairs Win 11 - 2 Triples Win 11 - 3 Rinks Win 10 - 4 Well done to all who played tonight, it was a great team effort and result! |
