East Williamston were at home for tonight’s Main League match against top of the table Tavernspite.
Mark played Singles and won the first end. However the visitors soon gauged the mat, taking the next three ends and a 4 shot advantage. Mark won 1 on the fifth but Tavernspite came straight back with 1 on the sixth and 3 on the seventh. Mark took another 1 on the eighth but another 2 on the ninth gave Tavernspite an 8 point lead. Mark won the last three ends with a further 4 shots but the gap was too wide and Tavernspite took the win. Theresa and Phill played Pairs and got off to a good start, taking the first two ends. Tavernspite came straight back however, winning 3 on the third, 1 on the fourth, 3 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth. East Williamston rallied taking 1 on each of the next four ends and closing the gap to 3 shots. However a further 1 on the eleventh and 4 on the last end sealed the win for Tavernspite. Brenda, Cliff and Phill E played Triples. The visitors took 1 on the first end but the home side replied with 3 on the second and 1 on the third. Tavernspite took another 4 over the next two ends. East Williamston won 2 on the sixth and by the seventh end the scores were tied. The home side took another 1 on the eighth but with Tavernspite taking 2 on the ninth and 2 on the tenth the win went to the visitors. Kym, Mandy, Sharon and Fran played Rinks. The visitors took the first end but East Williamston grabbed 1 on the second. Tavernspite were very successful at surrounding the jack but East Williamston were good at disrupting and ensured that Tavernspite were only winning ends by 1 bowl. This strategy worked well until the sixth end when the visitors picked up 2 on the sixth, closely followed by a painful 5 on the seventh, 2 on the eighth and 3 on the final end and took a convincing win. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 0 - 8 on points and 22 - 52 on shots Singles Loss 7 - 11 Pairs Loss 7 - 15 Triples Loss 7 - 10 Rinks Loss 1 - 16

We have a Winner!!
Congratulations to our Captain, Sharon, who won the Blue Group Trophy at the South Pembs Singles Tournament, held today at Heatherton. Representing East Williamston were Sharon, Theresa, Phill and Fran. Players were split into groups in the morning with the winners of each group going into the Red Group and the other players from each group went into the Blue Group. Theresa played well, winning one of her group games but had to play against Sharon in the afternoon, but after a close game Sharon took the win. Unfortunately today wasn’t the day for Phill, who lost all of his games. Having won all of her group games Fran went into the Group Winners Red Group, where she beat two further opponents to get into the semi final. At the end of the 7th end the game was tied, so an extra end was played. Frans last bowl looked to be holding, with her opponent agreeing. However the umpire suggested a measure and whilst Frans bowl looked closest to the jack, it proved to be 2mm further away and the game went to her opponent. However an excellent achievement finishing 3rd in the Winners Red Group. Sharon had won two of her four group games and progressed into the Blue Group. Where she won a further three matches to get into the Final. It was a very close final against Alan of Skrinkle and by the end of the seventh end the game was tied. An extra end was played and her opponent was holding with two bowls, but Sharons last shot of the game proved to be the winner as it gently curled in, landed next to the jack and took the end, the game and the trophy!🏆 A great result overall for East Williamston East Williamston were away for tonights Main League match against The Meads.
The home side had requested that the Triples and Rinks play first. Steve, Mandy and Phill E played Triples and got off to a good start, winning the first two ends. The Meads levelled on the third but East Williamston took another 3 on the fourth end and it looked as though the visitors were pulling away. However, The Meads had other ideas, winning 3 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth. East Williamston recovered 1 on the seventh but the home side pressed ahead, winning the last three ends, widening the gap to 6 shots and taking the win. Mark, Theresa, Sharon and Fran played Rinks and soon realised that the floor was going to be an additional opponent, with bowls suddenly kicking out in the opposite direction. East Williamston struggled to get to the jack and even when they did The Meads managed to steal shot and stormed ahead taking the first six ends and a 12 shot lead. The visitors were finally holding shot on the seventh end and The Meads couldn’t disrupt it and with the last bowl of the end East Williamston crept in a second bowl to take 2 and finally get on the scoreboard. East Williamston had successfully cut The Meads back to 1 shot over a number of ends, but despite this the gap was too wide and the home side took the win. Mark played Singles on the other mat, which seemed to be playing more predictably. He lost 3 on the first end but came back to take 2 on the second. The Meads took 2 more on the third but Mark came back to take the next five ends and a 4 shot advantage. The Meads pulled back 5 over the next three ends and had the lead as they entered the final end. Mark kept focused and despite the home team trying to play clever Mark managed to ditch the jack into the corner, holding 1 and as The Meads final bowl fell off the mat, Mark drew in his final bowl to take 2 and the win. Phill P and Mandy played Pairs and soon experienced the peculiar mat behaviour they had been warned about (made Phill’s swingy bowls played straight)! The visitors took 3 on the first end but The Meads came back strongly, winning the next 6 ends and a 6 shot lead. However, East Williamston took 3 on the eighth and 3 on the ninth to level things up. The Meads took a further 3 on the tenth and 1 on the eleventh and as they entered the final end East Williamston knew that they needed to get all 4 bowls to the jack to draw. Despite a good try they could only get 2 and the home side took the win with a 2 shot advantage. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 2 - 6 on Points and 30 - 49 on shots Singles Win 11 - 10 Pairs Loss 13 - 11 Triples Loss 12 - 6 Rinks Loss 14 - 2 A very tough night on the road East Williamston were away for tonights South Pembs Friendly League match against Lamphey and everybody knew that they faced a challenging night on the legendary superfast blue mat!
Lamphey had requested that the Rinks be played first, which saw Brenda, Kym, Mandy and Phill P playing first. East Williamston got off to a very stong start, with Brenda playing some great bowls to the jack and, with the jack secured, Lamphey struggled to get near, which gave the visitors 2 shots on the first, 1 on the second and 3 on the third, although Lamphey pulled 2 back on the fourth. A great team play won 4 on the fifth and a further 2 on the sixth. Going into the last end East Williamston knew that, even if Lamphey pulled some magic out of the bag and landed all 8 bowls, they couldn’t close the gap. The home side could only manage 1 bowl near the jack and with a 9 shot advantage East Williamston took a comfortable win. Mark played Singles and despite struggling to get the weight right, he somehow managed to get his fourth bowl spot on each time, winning the first four ends by 1 shot! The home side were struggling and Mark continued to play some lovely bowls, taking 2 on the fifth, 2 on the sixth and 1 on the seventh. Having won all seven ends it was a convincing win for the visitors. Sharon and Fran played Pairs and started well, winning the first end. An unfortunate knock-on gave the home side 3 on the second but Sharon played two lovely bowls to the jack, on the third, which Lamphey could not move. Lamphey had a very lucky shot (their words) which somehow curled in through the 3 holding East Williamston bowls to take 1 on the fourth. Fran managed to spring the jack on the fifth, taking another 2 shots but with only 1 shot advantage the visitors knew it was all still to play for. A lovely drawing shot by Fran secured another 1 on the sixth and on the seventh, with Sharons bowl again resting on the jack, and despite Lampheys best efforts to dislodge it, they couldn’t, giving East Williamston the win. The final game of the evening was the Triples, with Paula, Theresa and Cliff. Lamphey started strongly, managing to win the first three ends with 4 shots. However Paula did some lovely weighted shots to the jack and East Williamston were on the score board with 2 on the fourth and Cliffs lovely drawing bowl, on the fifth, meant another 1 to the visitors . Lamphey won 1 on the sixth and, with only a 2 shot advantage, it was all going to be down to the final end. Lamphey had 3 bowls positioned around the jack and with his first bowl Cliff did a perfectly weighted shot which neatly cut inside the Lamphey bowls to land on the jack. Lampheys final bowl couldn’t change anything and so it was all down to Cliffs last bowl to try to tie the game. The hall fell silent as the bowl was sent on its way. The line was looking good, but as it neared it slowed just too early and fell short. East Williamston were very unlucky and so, despite winning the final end, the visitors ended 1 shot behind Lamphey who were pleased to have finally won a game. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 8 - 2 on points and 32 - 12 on shots Singles Win 9 - 0 Pairs Win 7 - 4 Triples Loss 4 - 5 Rinks Win 12 - 3 A superb team performance on a notoriously fast mat. Everybody concentrated superbly on trying to get the weight and shots on target and it paid off. Well done. Congratulations to our very own Mark Taylor and Chris Gilley who came runners up in the final of the PSMBA Pairs Tournament, held today at Heatherton.
The final was a hard fought battle against two strong competitors, Andrew Evans and Mark Thorpe, who eventually won the final with a score of 10-8. Well done also to Cliff & Paula Jacobs, Phill & Theresa Painting, Mandy Cresswell and Fran Harper-Green who all also entered the tournament; all of whom played some excellent bowls against stiff competition, which included Wales Intl players and World Champions. A great representation for East Williamston Final play off results below: East Williamston were on the road again for tonight's Main League match against Tabernacle.
Up first was Mark in the Singles and Mandy and Fran in the Pairs. In the singles, the home side got off to a strong start, winning the first two ends and a 5 shot lead. However Mark came back, equally strongly, winning the next three ends with 6 shots. Tabernacle took the sixth but Mark pressed ahead taking the next four ends and widening his lead by a further 6 shots. The home side tried to recover and took 2 on the eleventh but with a further 2 shots on the final end for Mark, he took the win with a 6 shot advantage. Mandy and Fran started well, winning the first end, with Tabernacle taking the second. Some nice bowling gave the visitors the lead as they took the third and fourth ends and a 3 shot advantage, however Tabernacle pinched 2 on the fifth and 1 on the 6th making the score level. East Williamston took 1 on the seventh and some excellent bowling gave them a further 4 on the eighth. With a 5 shot lead and only four more ends to go, the visitors were hopeful, however, Tabernacle suddenly improved their ability to get to the jack and with it successfully took the ninth, tenth and eleventh ends. With both sides tied on 10 shots it was all to play for in the final end. With Mandys bowls long and short Fran just needed to draw in for the win, however it wasn’t to be as the final bowl stayed out and refused to turn, giving Tabernacle the 1 shot they needed to take the win. Kym, Cliff and Sharon played triples and, again, started strongly winning the first and second ends. Tabernacle pulled back the third and fourth ends to make things level again. A lovely draw to the jack, by Cliff, gave East Williamston 1 on the fifth, but Tabernacle again levelled on the sixth. On the seventh end Tabernacle were looking strong with three bowls surrounding the jack. Sharon just needed to draw in to cut them down but as the bowl looked to be going wide, it wicked, hit the jack and sprung it to East Williamstons awaiting back bowls and 2 more shots on the scoreboard. Tabernacle won the eighth and ninth ends and sat with a 2 shot advantage and, again, it was going to be down to the last end. On the final end Tabernacle were holding shot and it looked as though they were again going to pinch the end. However with the last bowl of the game Sharon tapped the holding Tabernacle bowl which sprung the jack to Kyms perfectly placed back bowls giving 2 shots to East Williamston to tie the game. Brenda, Steve, Phill P and Phill E played Rinks. A positive start gave the visitors 1 in the first and 4 on the second. However Tabernacle were very good at surrounding the jack which gave them the next three ends, 7 shots and a 2 shot cushion. East Williamston pulled 1 back on the sixth but again Tabernacle were more precise and surrounded the jack, making life difficult for the two Phills to break things up. Tabernacle widened their lead, winning the seventh and eighth ends and a 4 shot advantage. On the final end the two Phills were firing some serious cannonball shots in an attempt to break up the Tabernacle pack, but couldn’t get past the block with sufficient bend to catch them. They did cut them down but with a further 3 shots on the final end the home side had a 7 shot lead and took the win. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 3 - 5 on points and 38 - 40 on shots Singles Win 14 - 8 Pairs Loss 10 - 11 Triples Tied 8 - 8 Rinks Loss 6 - 13 There was a really great atmosphere tonight and both sides enjoyed some very close, competitive games. On a cold, wet and blustery evening East Williamston travelled to Llanteg for tonight’s Friendly League match.
Playing on one mat, up first was Phill E in the Singles. Phill got off to a good start, winning both the first and second ends, with 3 shots. However Phil soon discovered the mat had a couple of peculiar nuances, which the home side were very familiar with, and Llanteg came back strongly winning the next four ends and a 6 shot cushion. Phill pinched 1 on the last end but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Theresa and Phill P played the Pairs. The home side started strongly and, despite East Williamston playing spme good shots to the jack, Llanteg managed to pinch shot bowl. By the fourth end Llanteg had won all ends with a 5 shot lead, however, East Williamston weren’t giving up, taking 2 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth. It was all on the last end with East Williamston needing 2 to at least take a draw. Theresa played a lovely bowl and was holding shot but Llanteg made it very difficult and the second bowl could not find its way through, leaving East Williamston short and giving Llanteg the win. Paula, Steve and Mark played Triples and got off to a good start winning the first end. Paula played some excellent shots to the jack and the score pinged from one team to the next with East Williamston winning 2 on the third and 2 on the fifth and Llanteg winning 1 on the second, 1 on the fourth and 2 on the sixth. With 1 shot advantage to the visitors it was, again, going to be down to the last end. Fingers were crossed for the win but Llanteg managed to pull 1 back on the final end resulting in a tie with 5 shots each. Cliff, Kym, Mandy and Fran played Rinks. The home side won the first end with 2 but East Williamston came back, winning 1 on the second, 1 on the third and 2 on the fourth. A disastrous fifth end gave Llanteg 4 and a two shot advantage. On the fifth end Fran managed to clip the opponents holding ball, springing the jack to two awaiting East Williamston bowls which meant that entering the final end both sides were level with 6 a piece. A great bowl from Cliff was holding and Llanteg were struggling to change it. East Williamston were piling on the pressure with 3 or 4 bowls behind. With her last bowl Fran needed to clip the jack and nudge it back towards the awaiting bowls. She successfully clipped the jack but it didn’t move and her bowl came to rest just behind. Llanteg had the final bowl of the night. It looked to be going astray but turned at the last second and touched the jack enough to move it from Cliffs bowl, but not far enough to send it onto the East Williamston back bowls, landing right next to it to steal the end with, what they described, as an amazingly lucky shot! It was an excellent evening of bowls, by all players, and some very close games. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 1 point to 9 and 19 shots to 26 Singles Loss 4 - 9 Pairs Loss 4 - 5 Triples Tied 5 - 5 Rinks Loss 6 - 7 East Williamston were at home for the first Main League match of 2023, against Hook.
First up was Mark in the Singles and Theresa and Phill P in the Pairs. In the Singles Hook took the first two ends and 2 shots but Mark pulled those 2 shots back in the third closely followed by 1 in the fourth and 3 in the fifth, giving him a 4 shot cushion. Hook replied with 3 in the sixth but Mark was consistently better at pinching the jack as well as the next three ends. The ends were closely fought but Mark was doing some lovely shots and by the ninth end was still holding firm with his 4 shot cushion. Hook took 1 shot on the tenth and the eleventh but with Mark securing the last end Hook were unable to close the gap and Mark took the 2 points. Theresa and Phill P played pairs. Hook were straight to the jack on the first end and took 2 shots. Theresa and Phill rallied with a solid 4 shots on the second and nudged themselves into the lead. However Hook took the third and fourth and the lead. Once again the Paintings rose to the pressure taking 3 on the fifth and by the eighth end it was all tied at 8 apiece. However East Williamston started to struggle and Hook took advantage, winning the last 4 ends with 8 shots and a strong finish to take the win. Brenda, Cliff and Phill E played Triples and again faced a strong Hook side who took an early lead. East Williamston levelled on the second but 3 shots on the third pushed Hook ahead once more. Some nice bowling gave East Williamston the fourth but after that Hook just became too dominant, winning the remaining 6 ends and the game with a significant margin. Gwyneth, Steve, Mandy and Fran played rinks and as with all the other games Hook took the first end and East Williamston the second. 3 shots on the third, followed by 1 on the fourth and Hook were creeping ahead, however, with some precision bowling East Williamston took 3 on the fifth and drew to within 1 point of the leaders. East Williamston played a good game and held Hook to just 1 shot on three ends. A lovely bit of bowling gave East Williamston 1 on the eighth and entering the final end there was just 2 shots in it. On the final end Hook had done a good job of surrounding the jack and with the final bowl East Williamston managed to split the visitors bowls but Hook still took the 3 shots and the win. Overall Result: Loss to East Williamston 2 - 6 on points and 25 - 52 on shots Singles Win 10 - 7 Pairs Loss 8 - 16 Triples Loss 2 - 19 Rinks Loss 5 - 10 Well done to everyone who played. The scoreline didn’t truly reflect how closely fought some of the matches were. |
