East Williamston’s second game of the week was at home against Llanteg in the South Pembs Friendly League. Due to Llanteg being a couple of players short the running order of matches was changed. First up was Phill E in the Singles who played a steady, close game and was leading up to the 6th end. Unfortunately for Phill the visitors got 4 shots on the last end which took the win. Gwyneth, Mark, Kym and Fran were on the second mat in Rinks. They got off to a strong start, winning 3 shots on the first end and won each end up to the 5th where a misunderstanding on the weight of shot needed gave Llanteg the opportunity to secure 5 shots. East Williamston regrouped and won the final two ends to take a strong win. Mandy and Sharon were tonight’s Pairs but surprisingly struggled from the off. The visitors had quickly worked out the mat and successfully secured the first three ends with a 5 shot gap. East Williamston tried hard to close the gap and despite a good final end were just pipped to the post by Llanteg. Theresa, John and Phill P played Triples and got off to a decent start, winning the first two ends. But Llanteg came back at them, winning the next 4. The last end was a nail biter with East Williamston needing the win, points and shots in order to secure the match bonus points. The last end was wide open and Phill needed a nice draw in to the jack to win the end, which he did..phew!
it was a closely fought match but East Williamston were pleased to secure victory. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 6 - 4 on points and 31 shots v 26 shots Singles Loss 5 - 7 Doubles Loss 5 - 7 Triples Win 8 - 7 Rinks Win 13 - 5

East Williamston were home for tonight’s match against last years league winners, Tavernspite.
Mark got off to a good start, winning the first end, in the singles but Tavernspite fought back, winning the next 5 ends. Mark successfully started to claw the game back but time was against him, losing 8-11. Mandy & Fran were ahead, in the Pairs, until the 4th end but were unlucky as, despite some great shots to the jack, the jack insisted on popping towards a Tavernspite bowl! A loss of 4 shots in the 10th end just took the game away from them, losing 9-15. John, Theresa and Phill played Triples but struggled from the off as every decent shot was beaten by Tavernspite. East Williamston finally got on the scoreboard at the 8th end but the damage was done, losing 3-15. Brenda, Cliff, Kym and Sharon played Rinks and played a steady game and refused to let Tavernspite run away with the game. They stayed in touch and winning 4 shots on the 6th end brought them within 1 shot. The last end was a nail biter with the possibility of the home side sneaking a 3 shot win, to secure the game, but the final bowl by Tavernspite was pure skill and they pinched the end winning 9-7. Despite the overall result this was East Williamston’s best ever performance against a top team (half of whom are Welsh Intl players) and everybody played really well. Overall Result: Loss to East Williamston 0-8 points with 27 shots to their 50 Singles Loss 8 - 11 Pairs Loss 9 - 15 Threes Loss 0 - 15 Rinks Loss 7 - 9 East Williamston were away for the first match of the Friendly League, with a visit to St Johns.
For the first time the match was to be played on two mats. Phill E struggled in the singles and couldn't get to grips with the mat. He started to make some traction half way through the match but by then the gap was to wide. Mandy and Fran faced similar issues in the pairs with bowls playing short or too straight and long. They took the first end but St Johns were very good at surrounding the jack and despite some decent shots East Williamston could not win the ends. Kym, Steve and Mark played triples and took some heavy defeats early on. However they persisted and having secured the final end with 5 they took the draw. Heather, Theresa, Sharon and Chris played Rinks and initially encountered similar issues with understanding the mat. However when they won an end they did so with 3 shots which carried them through to secure the win. Playing on two mats was a real positive for the game, resulting in far less sitting around, waiting to play and with a much earlier finish it gave teams time to chat and enjoy refreshments before leaving. Overall result: Loss to East Williamston 3 - 7 with 22 shots to 43 for St Johns Singles Loss 4 - 15 Pairs Loss 1 - 15 Triples Draw 8 - 8 Rinks Win 9 - 5 Our first Main League match of the season was at home against Hook.
It was a little daunting for Mark, in the Singles, as he faced the current World Champion! However Mark kept his cool and made the most of our home advantage on our new mats. By the 3rd end Hook were on the scoreboard but Mark kept on steady play and despite losing 3 shots on the last end he took the overall win with 12 shots to 10. Phill E and Sharon were having a torrid time in the pairs with Phil having to use borrowed bowls, which didn't help their game, and it took until the 7th end to get on the scoreboard, by which time the gap was just too wide, and they faced an uphill battle to the end. Losing 2-20. Gwyneth, Mandy and Fran started well in the Triples but had two ends where they lost by 3 shots, which did the damage. They had a come back in the last few ends and were very unlucky to have a couple of ends pinched from them, but following a good effort were defeated 5-10. Brenda, Theresa, Kym and Cliff also had a good start in the Rinks, getting 3 in their second end, but Hook fought back and held the next 6 ends, taking 5 shots in the last end, with the end result a loss of for East Williamston of 4-18. Despite the overall result, against a good side, there were some good performances. Overall Result: Loss to East Williamston 2-6 on points with 23 shots to their 58. Singles Win 12 - 10 Pairs Loss 2 - 20 Triples Loss 5 - 10 Rinks Loss 4 - 18 Did you know that whenever you buy anything online – from your weekly shop to your annual holiday – you could be raising free donations for East Williamston SMBC with easyfundraising?
