Another rainy night on the road for East Williamston as we travelled to The Meads.
Mark played Singles and got off to a strong start, taking 2 on the first and 4 on the second. The Meads came back, taking the next three ends with 8 shots. However Mark took control once more taking the next three ends with 6 shots and, with a 4 shot lead, was ahead once more. The Meads were not going to give up without a fight and closed the gap with 2 more shots over the ninth and tenth ends. One more to East Williamston on the eleventh and with just 1 to The Meads on the final end it meant that the home side could not close the gap and the visitors took the win. Fran and Mandy played Pairs and after a shaky first end they took the next three ends with 3 shots to level the scores. But the Meads took 2 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth and widened the gap to 5. The ends yo-yo’d between the two sides with East Williamston taking 2 on the seventh, The Meads 2 on the eighth, 2 more to East Williamston on the ninth and 1 to The Meads on the tenth. On the eleventh end East Williamston had three but an error (picking up a ditched toucher before it was counted) meant only 2 were awarded. Going into the final end there was just 2 shots between the two sides. The home side did a good job of surrounding the jack and East Williamston just needed to draw in to cut it down, but unfortunately the final bowl was sent with weight and missed, giving the home side 4 and the win. Stephen, Theresa and Phill P played Triples and initially struggled to gauge the mat, losing the first three ends and 5 shots. East Williamston came back to take 1 on the fourth but with 2 more to the home side on the fifth, the gap had widened to 6. However with 3 on the sixth, 1 on the seventh and 1 on the eighth suddenly East Williamston were back in the game, with The Meads lead cut to just one shot. But the ninth end proved disastrous for the visitors as the home side took 6 plus 1 more on the final end to secure the win. The final game was the Rinks with Steve, Gwyneth, Phill E and Cliff. The home side took 2 on the first end with East Williamston taking the next three ends with 5 shots. The Meads pulled back 3 on the fifth to level the scores and, having successfully surrounded the jack and with East Williamston struggling to get anywhere near, the home side took 4 on the sixth end. East Williamston’s skip did a lovely shot, which curled onto the jack, for 1 on the seventh but another 3 on the eighth and 2 on the ninth sealed the win for The Meads. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 2 - 8 on Points, 34 - 54 on shots Singles Win 13 - 11 Pairs Loss 9 - 15 Triples Loss 6 - 14 Rinks Loss 6 - 14 Despite the losses everyone played really well, on very tricky mats, against a very good team.

East Williamston were away for tonight’s Friendly League game against New Hedges.
Playing on one mat, Mark was up first in the Singles and started confidently taking 1 on the first, 3 on the second and 1 on the third. The pressure was on the home side but, as they became more practiced on their mat, they started to come back. They were successful at breaking up Mark’s holding shots to take the ends, with 1 on the fourth, 1 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth. With the gap now just a 2 shot lead, to the visitors, Mark knew he needed to hold firm, which he did, taking all 4 on the last end to secure the win. Cliff and Mandy played Pairs, with the home side taking 2 on the first end. But East Williamston regrouped and took the next five ends with 10 shots. New Hedges pulled 1 back on the final end but the gap was too wide and the visitors took the win. Gwyneth, Theresa and Fran played Triples and, again, the home side took 2 on the first end as East Williamston tried to gauge the very swingy mat. But the visitors came back to take 1 on the second and 2 on the third. New Hedges pulled back 1 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth to creep into the lead but a couple of cracking shots by the visitors secured 2 on the sixth and 1 on the final end to take the win. Paula, Kym, John and Phill P played Rinks and as with the other games, the home side took the first end with 1. A great performance by all of East Williamston secured 4 on the second and 1 on the fifth. However, New Hedges were not done and despite East Williamston doing a great job of getting to the jack, the home side kept managing to sneak a bowl in, taking 3 shots over the next three ends. Going into the final end East Williamston were holding a very slender 1 shot lead. Again East Williamston had a pack surrounding the jack until New Hedges, again, managed to sneak one bowl onto the jack. It looked as though the fours would have to settle for a draw, until the last shot of the game, sent by East Williamston’s skip, which somehow wiggled its way in to knock the home bowl off the jack to take shot. A measure confirmed it was 2 to the visitors and another win. Overall Result. : Win to East Williamston 10 - 0 Points and 32 - 14 on shots Singles Win 9 - 3 2 Points Pairs Win 10 - 3 2 Points Triples Win 6 - 4 2 Points Rinks Win 7 - 4 2 Points Shot Bonus 2 Points East Williamston were home for tonight’s Friendly League Match against Llanteg.
Playing on one mat, up first was Mark in the Singles, who landed the first two ends with 3 shots. Llanteg were starting to gauge the mat and took 2 on the third. Mark replied with 3 on the fourth and widened the gap to 4 shots. Mark played a good drawing game but Llanteg kept on firing shots to break up the home pack and successfully took the last three ends with 4 shots to level the game. Fran and Mandy were back, playing Pairs, and started confidently taking 5 on the first end. Again, the home side played a good drawing game and, struggling with the mat, Llanteg couldn’t reply, with the next three ends going to East Williamston with 1 on the second, 2 on the third and 4 on the fourth. Llanteg pulled 2 back on the fifth, but with a gap of 10 it was an uphill battle for them. East Williamston took another 3 on the sixth and 1 on the seventh and a convincing win. Stephen, Theresa and Chris played triples but this time Llanteg struck first taking 1 on the first end. However, East Williamston came back with a vengeance taking all of the remaining six ends and, with no reply from the visitors, the home side took another commanding win. The final game of the night was Gwyneth, John, Phill E and Phill P in the Rinks. East Williamston took the first end with 2 but Llanteg were not going to give up without a fight and every time the home side had the jack surrounded, the visitors managed to sneak a bowl in, coming back to take 2 on the second and 1 on the third. The home side held on to the jack to take 4 on the fourth, but Llanteg struck again to take 1 on the fifth. 3 more to East Williamston on the sixth and a slender 5 shot advantage. The last end was going to be tense. East Williamston were holding when Llanteg pinched it and added another 4 to the pack. The home side tried to split them, but to no avail and it fell to the skip to try and rescue it, which he did, as his bowl nicely nudged into the pack to cut Llanteg down to 3 which retained the win for East Williamston. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 9 - 1 points, 45 - 16 shots Singles Draw 6 - 6 Pairs Win 16 - 2 Triples Win 14 - 2 Rinks Win 9 - 7 Match kindly sponsored by Trubloc East Williamston were away for tonight’s Main League match against Letterston.
Playing Singles was Mark who got off to a strong start taking the first five ends with 7 shots. However just as it looked like he was pulling ahead Letterston took 4 on the sixth, 1 on the seventh, 1 on the eighth and 2 on the ninth and suddenly Letterston were ahead by 1. Mark played his socks off, taking another 4 on the tenth, 3 on the eleventh and 1 on the final end to take a comfortable win. Fran and Mandy played Pairs. The home side took 1 on the first end with East Williamston pinching 1 back on the second. The visitors were struggling to conquer the mat and Letterston started to creep ahead with 1 on the third and 2 on the fourth. A couple of nice draws to the jack and suddenly East Williamston pulled back 3 on the fifth to level the scores once more. The next four ends proved frustrating for the visitors as, despite East Williamston holding, the home side kept pinching the wins, taking another 7 shots. East Williamston weren’t done yet and won the last three ends but, despite this, the gap was too wide and Letterston took the win. Playing Triples were Kym, Theresa and Phill P who took 1 on the first end. Letterston came back, taking 1 on the second and 2 on the third but some lovely bowls, into the pack, by the visitors, gave them 3 on the fourth. Another 1 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth and the East Williamston were creeping ahead. But again, Letterston were not going to let the visitors have it all their own way, pulling back 1 on the seventh and 2 on the eighth. Suddenly the scores were level and East Williamston knew they needed to pull out all the stops, with the whole team bowling to the jack to take 4 on the ninth and a little bit of breathing space. Letterston took 2 on the final end but a 2 shot advantage to the visitors sealed the win. Stephen, Gwyneth, Cliff and Phill E played Rinks. Letterston took 1 on the first but East Williamston took the next three ends with three shots. However the fifth end proved disastrous, as the visitors failed to break up the Letterston pack, giving the home side 5 shots and the lead. After that East Williamston seemed to struggle with bowls going off, being short, being long and hitting the block and Letterston just kept taking the ends with a further 4 shots over the next three ends. East Williamston took a consolation 1 on the last end but, sadly, that fifth end had taken the game away from them. Despite the loss there was some excellent bowling by everyone, with closely fought matches, on tricky mats. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 4 - 6 points and 36-37 shots (Unfortunately we missed out on the aggregate 2 point bonus by just 2 shots) Singles Win 15 - 4 Pairs Loss 7 - 11 Triples. Win 10 - 8 Rinks Loss 4 - 10 Tonights match was our first Main League fixture, at home to last seasons league winners, Tavernspite.
Playing Singles was Mark. The first end went to the visitors but Mark came back to take the second and third. Mark did some great bowls to surround the jack but the visitors managed to knock through to take 2 on the fourth. Mark took control once more, drawing to the jack beautifully and managing to disrupt the end when Tavernspite looked to be about to pinch shot. Mark took one on each of the next four ends. Tavernspite were 3 shots behind by the eighth end but were not finished as they turned up the pressure. Mark was holding but Tavernspite expertly pinched 2 on the ninth and 2 on the tenth. 1 more to Mark on the eleventh and all things were level going into the final end. Unfortunately Tavernspite managed to take 2 on the final end and the win. Fran and Mandy played Pairs and got off to a confident start with 3 on the first end. Tavernspite came back with 1 on the second and 1 on the third. Fran was having a great drawing game, landing on the jack nearly every end which made it more difficult for the visitors, with East Williamston taking the next three ends with 4 shots and holding a 5 shot lead. Tavernspite were trying to surround the jack, on the seventh, but Mandy split the pack and they took only 2. Going into the eighth Fran landed two bowls perfectly around the jack and despite pushing through Tavernspite couldn’t disrupt things. Mandy’s bowls cut inside to give the home side 4. Again on the ninth Fran landed on the jack but Tavernspite managed to pinch the jack and take it into the ditch. Mandy bowled superbly, picking up Frans toucher into the ditch, landing perfectly between the jack and the Tavernspite bowl. With the gap now at 8, Tavernspite came back again, taking 3 on the tenth and 1 on the eleventh and, going into the final end, Tavernspite needed 4 to level but East Williamston held on, taking 1 and the win. Brenda, Kym and Phill E got off to a shaky start in the Triples with Tavernspite taking 3 over the first two ends. The home side regrouped pulling back 2 on the third, but Tavernspite were skilled at surrounding the jack and took the next three ends with 5 shots. Phill pulled 1 back on the seventh but with the jack surrounded and East Williamston unable to disrupt things the visitors took the final three ends with another 6 shots and a strong win. Stephen, Gwyneth, Cliff and Sharon played Rinks with this being Stephen’s first ever match. The home side started well with 2 on the first, with 2 then going to Tavernspite on the second. On the Third Tavernspite were surrounding the jack when Sharon did a great shot and landed on the jack to take 1. Tavernspite were, again, well drilled in surrounding the jack but sadly East Williamston bowls were just not getting to where they needed to and the visitors took 3 on the fourth, 1 on the fifth. Only 3 shots separated the two sides at this point, until the visitors secured a very painful 5 on the sixth end. Despite Tavernspite now holding an 8 shot lead, the home team continued to press and on the seventh end Tavernspite were holding in the ditch, however Sharon pulled off an amazing shot, clipping Cliffs toucher into the ditch to take the end. Unfortunately East Williamston just couldn’t get the bowls in to disrupt the pack and, whilst they cut the visitors down, Tavernspite took the last two ends with a further 2 shots. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 2 - 8 on points and 27-44 on shots (2 bonus points for shot advantage) Singles Loss 7 - 9 Pairs Win 13 - 8 Triples Loss 3 - 14 Rinks Loss 4 - 13 Match kindly sponsored by East Williamston were away, to Reynalton, for their first Friendly League match of the season.
First up was Mark in the Singles. The home side got off to a good start, taking the first two ends but Mark pulled 1 back on the third. Another 2 to Reynalton on the fourth and the gap was widening. Mark took another 1 on the fifth but was struggling to gauge the mat. Reynalton landed another 3 on the sixth and despite Mark winning 2 on the final end, the gap was too wide, giving Reynalton their first win of the night. Playing Pairs were Mandy and Fran. A confident start gave Reynalton 2 on the first end but East Williamston replied with 2 on the second. Another 2 to the home side on the third end and it looked as though Reynalton were going to pull away again. However two nice bowls by Mandy and the visitors were level once more. Reynalton were holding the fifth but Fran dislodged shot bowl to take 1 on the fifth. Another 1 to the visitors on the sixth and a two point lead. On the final end Mandy was holding with Reynalton second. Fran sent her last bowl down and feared the worst when she just touched Mandy’s bowl which fell away from the jack, but luckily her bowl curled inside the Reynalton bowl and nestled onto the jack, to take the end and the game. Playing Triples were Paula, Gwyneth and Sharon. Again Reynalton took the first end. East Williamston were really struggling to gauge the mat and Reynalton took advantage, surrounding the jack and taking 5 on the second end. On the third Reynalton were holding but a lovely bowl by Sharon cut inside to take 1. Reynalton took another 2 on the fourth and another couple of nice bowls gave the visitors another 2 on the fifth. 2 more to the home side on the sixth and a 7 shot lead the visitors knew they couldn’t catch them but another lovely bowl by Sharon on the final end reduced the deficit to 6. The final game was Rinks, played by Brenda, John, Kym and Cliff. This time it was East Williamston who had the confident start, taking 3 on the first and 2 on the second. Reynalton pulled one back on the third but two lovely shots by John and Cliff gave the visitors another 2 on the fourth and a 6 shot advantage. Despite East Williamston holding, Reynalton were suddenly disrupting ends and took 2 on the fifth and 2 on the sixth. On the final end, and with the lead now cut to only 2, East Williamston were holding 3 or 4 and just needed to block it up. Unfortunately it didn’t happen and Reynalton snuck their bowl through the pack to the jack. It looked as though Reynalton might have 2 to draw the game but a measure confirmed they had just 1 and with a 1 shot advantage East Williamston took the win. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 4 - 6 on points (Reynalton got bonus 2 points on shots) EW 22 - R 28 Singles Loss 4 - 8 Pairs Win 7 - 4 Triples Loss 10 - 4 Rinks Win 7 - 6 |
