With our October match against The Meads postponed until tonight it was our second home match in 7 days against The Meads.
Mark played singles and made a confident start with 2 on the first, 1 on the second and 2 on the third. The Meads took 1 on the fourth but 1 more to Mark, on the fifth, gave him a 5 shot lead. However, The Meads took 3 on the sixth to get back into contention. Mark took the next two ends with 2 shots but the visitors took the next three ends with 3 shots. Going into the final end Mark had just 1 shot advantage. Mark was holding but The Meads knocked him off and were then holding two. Mark had the last bowl and with his final shot he hit the holding Meads bowl, rolling it out of the way and Marks bowl landed near to the jack. It was a measure but Marks bowl took the end and the win. Paula, Theresa and Phill P played Triples and took the first end with 1. The Meads replied with 1 on the second, 1 on the third, and 1 on the fourth. 3 on the fifth end nosed the home side into the lead but The Meads came straight back with 1 on the sixth, 1 on the seventh and 1 on the eighth. East Williamston took 1 on the ninth and going into the final end the Meads led by 1 shot. The Meads were holding jack and, despite the home side sending a great last bowl which disrupted the pack, The Meads still held 1 to take the win. Gwyneth, Kym, Cliff and Sharon played Rinks and took 1 on the first end. East Williamston were holding numerous times but The Meads managed to keep on disrupting and, in doing so, took the next five ends with 7 shots. East Williamston took 1 on the seventh, but as the home side struggled to cover the jack The Meads took advantage and with another 6 shots over the last two ends they took the win. Penally came back to take 2 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth to nudge into the lead. Mark focused and pulled back 3 on the tenth, 1 on the eleventh and a superb 3 on the final end to tie the game and take a valuable point. Mandy and Fran played Pairs and struck first with 1 on the opening end. Penally took 1 on the second but East Williamston were drawing well and took 2 on the third, 2 on the fourth and 2 on the fifth. Penally pinched 1 on the sixth end and a wobble by the visitors saw them give Penally 3 on the seventh, to reduce East Williamston’s lead to just 2. However, it was just a wobble and East Williamston played a controlled game taking another 2 on the eighth, 1 on the ninth, 1 on the tenth, 1 on the eleventh, and 1 on the final end to take the win. Steve, Cliff and Sharon played Triples. Penally took the first end with 1, followed by the visitors taking 1 on the second. Penally were very good at surrounding the jack and took 4 on the third and 4 on the fourth. East Williamston came back with 3 on the fifth but Penally managed the game effectively, burying the jack and forcing the visitors to play down the straight side of the mat and, with East Williamston playing short and struggling to reach the pack, the home side took advantage winning 5 on the sixth, 3 on the seventh, 2 on the eighth, 3 on the ninth and 3 on the last end to take a commanding win. Stephen, Theresa, Phill E and Phill P played Rinks and started well with 4 on the first and 3 on the second to hold a 7 shot lead. However the visitors gave away 6 on the third and Penally were right back in the game. A great team effort, on the fourth, saw East Williamston get 5 and their lead restored. Another 1 on the fifth and it looked as though victory was in sight. However Penally hadn’t finished yet, taking 1 on the sixth, 2 on the seventh and 1 on the eighth. With the gap back to 3 East Williamston needed to manage the final end. The visitors were holding two or three until Penally disrupted things, but a lovely bowl in by the visitors secured 1 shot and the win. Another 2 to East Williamston on the tenth but The Meads took 4 on the eleventh to close the gap to just four. East Williamston knew they needed to hang on in the final end as another 4 to the visitors would tie the game. However a sigh of relief as The Meads first bowl was heavy into the ditch and despite them taking 2 it wasn’t enough to catch the home side who took the win. Theresa, Gwyneth and Sharon played Triples but, despite holding shot numerous times, The Meads just kept taking the ends, winning the first seven ends with 10 shots. However East Williamston did not give up and kept trying and were eventually rewarded with 2 on the eighth and 2 on the ninth. The event was held at Heatherton on Saturday 6th January where a total of 20 teams had been entered. This years pairings were Sharon & Mandy, Mark & Fran and Theresa & Phill P. The twenty teams were split across 4 groups for the initial round robin stages, with the top 2 from each group going through to the quarter finals. Mark & Fran found themselves in a very strong group against some tough competition, but won all games except one, against St Johns which, despite taking all 6 shots on one end, resulted in a draw, placing East Williamston second in the group. Both Sharon & Mandy and Theresa & Phill won all of their matches to top their respective groups. Teams were drawn in the quarter final where Phill & Theresa were to face Badgers and the other two East Williamston teams were to face each other, which would see disappointment for one of the pairs. Mandy & Sharon started strongly and were 5-0 ahead by the 2nd end, however Mark & Fran pulled them back to take the win by just 1 point to secure their place in the semi final (plus bragging rights)! In the semi final Phill & Theresa played against Allen Watts from Llanteg & Graham Harries from Skrinkle. East Williamston had an early lead but it wasn’t to be as Alan & Graham took the win. Fran & Mark knew, having drawn against St Johns earlier that it wasn’t going to be an easy match. St Johns were playing well, drawing to the jack every end and even when East Williamston were holding 3 or 4, St Johns managed to pinch ends, eventually taking the win to take them through to the final. Finishing joint 3rd was an excellent result for East Williamston but congratulations go to Norman & Richard from St Johns who won the final (and the trophy) 🏆 For the third and final game of the week, East Williamston were on the road for tonight’s South Pembs Friendly match against St Twynnells.

Up next was Mark, playing Singles. Mark also made a strong start, with 1 on the first, 3 on the second, 2 on the third and 1 on the fourth. Mandy and Fran played Pairs and struck first, taking 2 on the first and 2 on the second. St Twynnells pulled back 1 on the third and 1 on the fourth but a great team effort, by the visitors, secured 4 on the fifth to hold a six shot lead. 1 more shot to St Twynnells on the sixth but East Williamston took 1 on the last end to secure the win. Letterston pulled 1 back on the seventh but East Williamston replied with another 1 on the eighth and 1 on the ninth. Playing on one mat, up first was Mark in the Singles. Mark made a good start, taking 1 on the first, 1 on the second and 1 on the third. Kilgetty pulled 2 back on the fourth but Mark played brilliantly on the fifth to land all 4, closely followed by 2 on the sixth. On the final end Mark was holding but Kilgetty played a lovely shot to take 1, but it wasn’t enough for them to close the gap. Up next were Sharon and Fran in the Pairs. East Williamston again started well, taking 1 on the first end, but Kilgetty quickly replied to take 2 on the second and 1 on the third to nudge into the lead. Going into the final end East Williamston were holding a slender 2 shot lead. Kilgetty nudged away the holding East Williamston bowl to take shot and soon added another to hold 2, which would give them a draw. However the final bowl of the game belonged to East Williamston and, having already tried to disrupt the two holding Kilgetty bowls, the East Williamston skip decided just to draw in to try and cut the home side down to 1. The final bowl proved to be an absolute beauty as it curled in to land squarely on the jack to take shot and the win. Kym, Theresa and Mandy played Triples. This time Kilgetty struck first, taking 1 on the first, but a tremendous Team effort gave East Williamston 4 on the second. Kilgetty quickly pulled 3 back on the third to level the scores but East Williamston were playing a good game of getting to the jack and then building a wall to defend it. This strategy worked well, delivering 2 on the fourth, 4 on the fifth, 1 on the sixth and 1 on the final end to seal themselves a solid win. The final game of the evening saw Stephen, John, Gwyneth and Phill P in the Rinks. East Williamston’s first bowl got to the jack and Kilgetty couldn’t disrupt it, giving the visitors 1. Kilgetty took 1 on the second but a great team effort gave the visitors 4 on the third and 1 on the fourth and a 5 shot lead. Kilgetty took 1 on the fifth and, on the sixth end, East Williamston were holding 1, but a stray shot nudged the Kilgetty bowls to give the home side 2. With the lead now cut to just 2 it was all down to the final end. East Williamston had built a wall, and there was no obvious shot bowl. However a great nudge, by the visiting skip, rolled one of the East Williamston bowls forward towards the jack, to hold shot. Kilgetty couldn’t disrupt the head and East Williamston took the win. East Williamston were holding 3 on the third but Hook’s last bowl pinched shot to take 1. 1 more to the home side on the fourth, followed by 1 to Hook on the fifth and another to East Williamston on the sixth.
