As winners of the league East Williamston automatically went in to play the Chairman’s Challenge Competition, where they faced a team made up of one player from each team within the Friendly League plus the Chairman.
Playing on one mat Phill P played Singles and finished with a respectable draw, Sharon & Fran played Pairs who, after a very close game, lost by just one shot, Theresa, Kym & Chris won their triples game and Paula, Gwyneth, Cliff & Mark won the rinks. Ending the day 5-3 on points gave East Williamston the win and the trophy for a second season. Everybody tucked in to a lovely buffet and raffle afterwards to end an enjoyable afternoon.

Following 22 weeks of matches East Williamston Short Mat Bowls Club have emerged victorious as winners of the South Pembs Friendly League 23/24.
Competition was fierce amongst the 12 teams, who compete in the league, but East Williamston finished the season nearly 30 points clear of runner up club, The Badgers. Club Captain, Theresa Painting said “Everyone has worked so hard for this. We practiced twice a week throughout last summer to improve our game and this season it has really shown. We have four new members who have joined the club and already they have improved so much.” As league winners East Williamston will play in the Chairmans Challenge Trophy on the 27th April, where they will face a team made up from each of the other clubs in the league. Hopefully it will be another trophy in the cabinet! We ended the season where we started it, with a match against Reynalton.
Playing at home, and on one mat, up first was Phill P in the Singles. Phill made a good start with 2 on the first end. Reynalton took 2 back on the second but Phill was drawing well and replied with 2 on the third and 3 on the fourth, to hold a 6 shot lead. However Reynalton landed 4 on the fifth to cut East Williamston’s lead back to one. Phill played his game well, taking 1 on the sixth and 3 on the final end to secure the win. Theresa and Fran played Pairs and started strongly, with 4 on the first, 2 on the second and 2 on the third. Reynalton took 1 on the fourth. Another 1 to the home pair, on the fifth, pushed their lead to 8. Reynalton took 3 on the sixth but another 1 to East Williamston secured a solid win. Paula, Cliff and Mandy played Triples and they also made a strong start, with 3 on the first, 2 on the second and 3 on the third to sit with an 8 shot lead. Reynalton pulled 1 back on the fourth and 1 on the fifth. East Williamston took another 3 on the sixth and whilst Reynalton took 1 on the final end, it wasn’t enough to close the gap and East Williamston took the win. The final game of the night was Stephen, Steve, John and Mark in the Rinks. Again, it was the home team who started strongly, with 4 on the first, 4 on the second and 1 on the third. Reynalton took 1 on the fourth but another 1 to East Williamston, on the fifth, extended the lead to nine. The last two ends went to Reynalton with another 2 shots but they couldn’t close the gap and the home team took the win..
