East Williamston were at home for tonights South Pembs Friendly League match against top of the table St Johns. With only a couple of points between us the whole team knew that a good result was needed.
Playing on two mats Mark played Singles and Theresa and Phill P played Pairs. Mark got off to a strong start with 3 on the first end. St Johns pinched the second but Mark regained control with 1 on the third and 3 on the fourth. By the fifth end Mark had a 5 shot advantage and despite the visitors best efforts they couldn’t get back into the game. A further 3 on the sixth and 2 on the last end gave East Williamston a comfortable win. Theresa and Phil also got off to a very strong start, taking 4 on the first end. As in the singles, the visitors took the second but were struggling to judge the swing of the mat. By the fourth end the home side had a 5 shot lead. St Johns reduced the gap, taking 2 on the fifth but East Williamston had a superb sixth end, taking 5, and widening the advantage further. St Johns took 1 on the last end but the gap was too wide for them to close and East Williamston took the win and the points. Up next were Gwyneth, Cliff and Phill E in the Triples Having lost the first end East Williamston came back strongly, taking the next four and holding a 5 shot lead. St Johns fought back, taking 2 on the sixth but East Williamston held firm on the last end taking a further 2 shots and the win. The final match was the Rinks, with Kym, Steve, Mandy and Fran. Again the home team took an early lead, winning the first two ends. St Johns pulled 1 back on the third but East Williamston covered off everything St Johns threw at them and, despite looking likely to lose a couple of ends, East Williamston managed to pinch the shot, winning the last four ends and the game. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 10 - 0 on points and 40 - 10 on shots Singles Win 12 - 2 Pairs Win 11 - 4 Triples Win 8 - 3 Rinks Win 9 - 1 This was a tremendous team effort and a superb result against a very strong opponent. Congratulations to Mandy, Mark, Phill P and Fran who represented East Williamston at the South Pembs Fours Competition, held today at Heatherton.
They won all of their group games to get through to the knockout round where they beat Penally and Cosheston, in sudden death games. Having won both knockout games East Williamston had secured their place in the final. Their opposition was to be The Meads who, with three Welsh International players amongst them, were going to be tough to beat in only 7 ends. The Meads took an early lead but East Williamston slowly starting to gain on them. The last end was a close one but despite East Williamston taking 4 shots the game ended 10-8 to the Meads. It was a really great effort by East Williamston who played well and fought to the end. Well done |
