Tonight’s match was the South Pembs Friendly League fixture, that had been rearranged from January, against Hundleton.
In a change to the usual line up, playing Singles was Phill P who was slightly unnerved when the visitors first bowl of the night landed on the jack, but he recovered the situation well to take 1 on the first and 3 on the second. Hundleton took 1 on the third but Phill came straight back with 2 on the fourth and 3 on the fifth. With Phill now holding an 8 shot lead Hundleton continued to challenge taking 2 on the sixth but, with another 1 to Phill on the final end, he took the win. Theresa and Mandy played Pairs and started confidently with 4 on the first end. However Hundleton put up a good fight and, despite East Williamston often holding, the visitors kept disrupting the head and, in doing so, took 3 on the second, 2 on the third and 1 on the fourth to nudge themselves into the lead. East Williamston pulled back 1 on the fifth but another 1 to the visitors, on the sixth, held their lead. It was all down to the final end and with the visitors again holding it looked as though the points were lost. However a sublime weighted final shot by the East Williamston skipper scattered the holding bowls and took the jack to the awaiting pack to give the home side 3 and a 1 shot win. Stephen, Sharon and Fran played Triples and with only two bowls on the mat, on the first end, it was fortunately an East Williamston bowl which took the end. The home side took another 1 on the second but by the third end the visitors were better getting to the jack, taking 2 on the third and 3 on the fourth. East Williamston took 1 on the fifth and, after a great shot, were holding 2 on the sixth until Hundleton’s skip did a skilful shot to pinch it back. The visitors were now leading by 3 shots, as they entered the final end. Hundleton were again holding and the home team needed to break things up, so East Williamston fired a shot taking the jack back towards the home pack however the jack didn’t get the memo and instead fell off the mat to kill the end. The restart saw East Williamston landing 3 around the jack and, this time, Hundleton couldn’t disrupt things and with the skip also landing her two onto the jack East Williamston took 5 and the win. Cheryl, John, Cliff and Mark played Rinks and, with a great opening shot, took 1 on the first and 1 on the second. Hundleton pulled back 3 on the third but a tremendous team effort saw East Williamston land 7 on the fourth, to hold a 6 shot lead, followed by 1 on the fifth, 1 on the sixth and 1 on the final end to take a solid win. Hundleton put up a tremendous fight, with some close ends but, despite a few nervous moments, East Williamston bagged all ten points. Overall result : Win to East Williamston 10 - 0 on Points, 38 - 19 on shots Singles Win 10 - 3 (2 Points) Pairs Win 8 - 7 (2 Points) Triples Win 8 - 6 (2 Points) Rinks Win 12 - 3 (2 Points) Aggregate Shots 38 - 19 (2 Points)

Congratulations to our players who competed today in the South Pembs Singles Competition, held at Heatherton.
The fab four faced 27 other competitors, split across 6 groups with the top 2 from each group going through to the ‘Red’ Winners group and the next best four going into the ‘Blue’ best of the rest group. At the end of the mornings eight rounds Theresa, Sharon & Fran went into the Red group and Phill went into the Blue group. All four got through the first round of knockouts to go into the quarter finals. Sharon & Fran both narrowly lost their quarter finals matches, but Theresa and Phill won theirs, to go through to their respective semi finals, which they both won. Theresa faced Bill Adams, of Cosheston, in the final and finished runner up with Bill taking the Red Group trophy. Phill faced Melissa Harrison of Reynalton, with Phill taking the win and the Blue Group trophy. A fantastic performance by all, but a tremendous result for both Theresa & Phill 🍾🏆🥇🥈 East Williamston were at home for tonight’s South Pembs Friendly League match against St Twynnells.
Playing on two mats up first was Mark, playing Singles. Mark played a confident and consistent game taking 1 on the first end, 4 on the second, 3 on the third, 4 on the fourth, 4 on the fifth, 1 on the sixth and 2 on the final end to take a solid win. Sharon and Fran played Pairs and, on a speedy mat, St Twynnells took the first end with 1. However the home team regrouped, taking 4 on the second, 3 on the third, 4 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth. St Twynnells pulled 3 back on the sixth but with another 4 to East Williamston on the final end the home side took the win. Up next were Theresa, Kym and Mandy in the Triples. Starting well they took 2 on the first and 2 on the second. St Twynnells took 2 on the third but East Williamston took another 1 on the fourth and 2 on the fifth, to hold a 5 shot lead. St Twynnells took 1 on the sixth and 2 on the last end but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Dai, John, Steve and Phill P played rinks and got off to a shaky start as St Twynnells took 2 on the first, 1 on the second and 1 on the third. However East Williamston refocused, pulling back 2 on the fourth, 3 on the fifth, 2 on the sixth and 3 on the final end, for a tremendous comeback and 2 points. Overall Result : Win to East Williamston 10 -0 on Points, 52 - 13 on shots Singles Win 19 - 0 Pairs Win 16 - 4 Triples Win 7 - 5 Rinks Win 10 - 4 Aggregate Shots 52 - 13 East Williamston were away for tonight’s Pembs Main League match against Hook.
Mark played Singles and took a hit on the first end with Hook landing all 4, followed by another 1 on the second. Mark took 1 on the third but Hook instantly replied with 2 on the fourth and 1 on the fifth. Mark got another 1 on the sixth but with another 2 on the seventh to the home side, they had extended their lead to 8 shots. Mark was not finished, taking 2 on the eighth, 1 on the ninth and 2 on the tenth, to reduce the gap to just 3. However Hook landed another 4 on the eleventh and 3 on the final end to secure the win. Fran and Mandy played Pairs and despite holding on numerous ends the home team kept on pipping them to the jack, taking 1 on the first, 1 on the second, 2 on the third and 3 on the fourth. East Williamston managed to hang onto the jack to take 1 on the fifth, but Hook came back with 1 on the sixth, 1 on the seventh and 1 on the eighth to hold a 9 shot lead. East Williamston did not give up and played well, securing 1 on the ninth, 1 on the tenth, 1 on the eleventh and 1 on the final end but, despite cutting down Hook’s lead, it wasn’t enough to take the points. Gwyneth, Steve and Phill E played Triples and made a tremendous start with 3 on the first and 1 on the second but Hook regrouped, taking 3 on the third, 1 on the fourth, 4 on the fifth and a painful 5 on the sixth. East Williamston pulled 1 back on the seventh but another 3, on the eighth, to Hook gave them an 11 shot lead. The visitors took 1 on the ninth and 3 on the last end but they couldn’t catch up and Hook took the win. Theresa, Cliff, Chris and Phill P played Rinks with Hook making a strong start with 3 on the first, 2 on the second and 2 on the third. East Williamston pulled back 2 on the fourth with Hook taking 2 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth to hold an 8 shot lead. East Williamston took 1 on the seventh and a battle for the jack produced a tied end on the eighth. The visitors took 1 on the final end but Hook took the win. Everybody played really well this evening with the scores not really reflecting the performance. Overall Result : Loss to East Williamston 0 - 10 on Points, 25 - 53 on Shots Singles Lost 7 - 17 (0 Points) Pairs Lost 5 - 10 (0 Points) Triples Lost 9 - 16 (0 Points) Rinks Lost 4 - 10 (0 Points) Aggregate Shots 25 - 53 (0 Points) East Williamston were away for tonight’s South Pembs match against Cosheston.
Playing on two mats Mark played Singles and seemed to struggle getting the line of the mat, which played very strangely on both sides. The home side took advantage, taking the first 6 ends with 7 shots. On the final end the stars aligned for Mark as he landed all 4, but it was not enough to catch Cosheston and they took the win. Sharon and Fran played Pairs and also found the quirky mat and its angles an interesting play. Cosheston took the first end but East Williamston replied with 2 on the second and 1 on the third. 1 more to Cosheston on the fourth and the fifth to level the scores once more. A lovely steal gave the visitors 1 on the sixth and on the final end Cosheston were holding until East Williamston nudged their bowl off the jack and then proceeded to block it up, ensuring Cosheston were unable to further disturb the head, giving East Williamston the end and the win. Theresa, Cliff and Mandy played Triples and were down 2 shots after two ends. However a great team effort pulled back 4 on the third. 3 more to Cosheston on the fourth was followed by 1 to East Williamston on the fifth to level the scores. However another fantastic team effort landed all 6, for the visitors, on the sixth end to take the lead with a 6 shot advantage. East Williamston were holding 4 on the final end but a great shot by the Cosheston skip split the pack to take 1 but it wasn’t enough and East Williamston took the win. Paula, John, Steve and Phill P played Rinks and soon also realised the quirky nature of the mats, as Cosheston took 1 on the first and 1 on the second. But, by the third end, the visitors were getting the line and the target and took 1 on the third, followed by 1 on the fourth. 1 more to the home team was closely followed by 2 on the sixth to East Williamston. With the visitors leading by 1 and an overall aggregate shot advantage of just 5 the pressure was on the rinks to manage out the last end, which they did well, with Cosheston taking just 1 on the final end, which tied their game but ensured the 2 bonus shot points were going to the visitors. Overall Result Win to East Williamston 7 - 3 on Points, 24 - 20 on Shots Singles Lost 4 - 7 (0 Points) Pairs Win 5 - 3 (2 Points) Triples Win 11 - 6 (2 Points) Rinks Tied 4 - 4 (1 Point ) Aggregate Shots. 24 - 20 (2 Points) East Williamston entered three teams into this year’s Red Card Pairs Tournament to join 15 other teams from Clubs across the League.
The players representing East Williamston were Kym & Mark, Theresa & Phill and Mandy & Fran. Each team played 5 matches of 10 ends in the group stages, with the top 2 from each group going through to the quarter finals. Theresa & Phill found themselves in a tough group and, despite some closely fought games, lost all except one of their matches. Mandy & Fran won 2, tied 1 and lost 2 (one of which was against teammates Kym & Mark). Kym & Mark had more success, winning four out of five, and were through to the Quarter Finals. Unfortunately their journey ended in the quarters but they had put up a valiant effort to the end. Some great bowling by everyone…well done! East Williamston were home for tonight’s South Pembs Friendly League match against Skrinkle.
Playing on one mat, up first was Mark in the Singles. Mark made a confident start with 3 on the first end, 2 on the second and 2 on the third. Skrinkle were starting to better gauge the line of the mat and were closing in on the jack more, taking 1 on the fourth, 1 on the fifth and 1 on the sixth. Mark had carefully managed the game, ensuring that the visitors didn’t run away with the shots. Going into the final end Mark was holding a 4 shot lead and with Skrinkle just managing 2 it was the first win of the evening. Up next were Mandy and Fran in the Pairs and they got off to a shakier start, losing 2 on the first end. East Williamston took 1 on the second but another 2 went to the visitors, as the home side just struggled to get their weight and line right. However, by the fourth end East Williamston were firing on all cylinders, taking 3, followed by 4 on the fifth, 4 on the sixth and 3 on the final end for a strong finish and a solid win. Dai, Steve and Phill E played Triples and went down by 1 on the first end. However they replied with 2 on the second, 1 on the third, 1 on the fourth and 4 on the fifth to hold a 7 shot advantage. Skrinkle took 3 on the sixth and 1 on the last end but it wasn’t enough to close the gap and East Williamston took the points. The final game was the Rinks, played by Kym, Chris, Theresa and Phill P. East Williamston took the first end with 1. The second end was a real battle, with some excellent bowling from both sides, and resulted in a tie. Skrinkle couldn’t quite get their line right and the home side took advantage, with 1 on the third, 3 on the fourth, 3 on the fifth, 3 on the sixth and 2 on the last end. Skrinkle had put up a valiant fight but it wasn’t to be. Overall Result. : Win to East Williamston 10 - 0 on Points, 43 - 14 on Shots Singles Win 7 - 5 (2 Points) Pairs Win 15 - 4 (2 Points) Triples Win 8 - 5 (2 Points) Rinks Win 13 - 0 (2 Points) Aggregate Shots 43 - 14 (2 Points) Two teams represented East Williamston at the Red Cards Triples tournament, held at Heatherton over the weekend.
We had a ‘Boys Team’ which included Mark, Chris and Phill P and a ‘Girls Team’ which included Theresa, Mandy and Fran. Eleven teams were entered into the competition across all league teams, split into two groups. Unfortunately for East Williamston our two teams were drawn in the same group and faced each other in the first game of the day, which meant that one of our teams would start the day with a loss, and it was the girls who, despite a great comeback, lost 6-10. Unfortunately Chris was taken ill and had to retire but Sheila from Tavernspite very kindly agreed to step in to help. The boys (and Sheila) ended the round robin with two wins and 3 losses, and the girls ended with 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses and so ended the day for East Williamston. Both teams played some excellent bowls and were unlucky on some of their games. Next up is the Red Card Pairs Competition, next Sunday 28th January. With our October match against The Meads postponed until tonight it was our second home match in 7 days against The Meads.
Mark played singles and made a confident start with 2 on the first, 1 on the second and 2 on the third. The Meads took 1 on the fourth but 1 more to Mark, on the fifth, gave him a 5 shot lead. However, The Meads took 3 on the sixth to get back into contention. Mark took the next two ends with 2 shots but the visitors took the next three ends with 3 shots. Going into the final end Mark had just 1 shot advantage. Mark was holding but The Meads knocked him off and were then holding two. Mark had the last bowl and with his final shot he hit the holding Meads bowl, rolling it out of the way and Marks bowl landed near to the jack. It was a measure but Marks bowl took the end and the win. Fran and Mandy played Pairs and took 1 on the first end. 1 to the Meads on the second was followed by 2 to East Williamston on the third and 1 more to The Meads on the fourth. East Williamston were drawing well and took 2 on the fifth, 2 on the sixth and 1 on the seventh. The visitors took 1 on the eighth but a great team performance saw East Williamston land all 4 on the ninth, to hold a 9 shot lead. The Meads took 1 on the tenth and 1 on the eleventh, but East Williamston took another 1 on the final end to take a comfortable win. Paula, Theresa and Phill P played Triples and took the first end with 1. The Meads replied with 1 on the second, 1 on the third, and 1 on the fourth. 3 on the fifth end nosed the home side into the lead but The Meads came straight back with 1 on the sixth, 1 on the seventh and 1 on the eighth. East Williamston took 1 on the ninth and going into the final end the Meads led by 1 shot. The Meads were holding jack and, despite the home side sending a great last bowl which disrupted the pack, The Meads still held 1 to take the win. Gwyneth, Kym, Cliff and Sharon played Rinks and took 1 on the first end. East Williamston were holding numerous times but The Meads managed to keep on disrupting and, in doing so, took the next five ends with 7 shots. East Williamston took 1 on the seventh, but as the home side struggled to cover the jack The Meads took advantage and with another 6 shots over the last two ends they took the win. Some close games but East Williamston ended 4 shots light and so The Meads took the 2 Point aggregate shot bonus. Overall Result Loss to East Williamston 4 - 6 (Meads had 4+2 bonus) and 29-32 shots Singles Win 9 - 7 (2 Points) Pairs Win 13 - 5 (2 Points) Triples Lost 5 - 7 (0 Points) Rinks Lost 2 - 13 (0 Points) Aggregate Shots 29 - 32 (0 Points) East Williamston were away for tonight’s Main League match against Penally.
Mark played Singles and took the first end with 1. Penally replied with 2 on the second, followed by another 2 to Mark on the third and 1 on the fourth. Penally came back to take 2 on the fifth and 3 on the sixth to nudge into the lead. Mark took another 1 on the seventh but 1 on the eighth and 4 on the ninth gave Penally a 7 shot lead going into the tenth. Mark focused and pulled back 3 on the tenth, 1 on the eleventh and a superb 3 on the final end to tie the game and take a valuable point. Mandy and Fran played Pairs and struck first with 1 on the opening end. Penally took 1 on the second but East Williamston were drawing well and took 2 on the third, 2 on the fourth and 2 on the fifth. Penally pinched 1 on the sixth end and a wobble by the visitors saw them give Penally 3 on the seventh, to reduce East Williamston’s lead to just 2. However, it was just a wobble and East Williamston played a controlled game taking another 2 on the eighth, 1 on the ninth, 1 on the tenth, 1 on the eleventh, and 1 on the final end to take the win. Steve, Cliff and Sharon played Triples. Penally took the first end with 1, followed by the visitors taking 1 on the second. Penally were very good at surrounding the jack and took 4 on the third and 4 on the fourth. East Williamston came back with 3 on the fifth but Penally managed the game effectively, burying the jack and forcing the visitors to play down the straight side of the mat and, with East Williamston playing short and struggling to reach the pack, the home side took advantage winning 5 on the sixth, 3 on the seventh, 2 on the eighth, 3 on the ninth and 3 on the last end to take a commanding win. Stephen, Theresa, Phill E and Phill P played Rinks and started well with 4 on the first and 3 on the second to hold a 7 shot lead. However the visitors gave away 6 on the third and Penally were right back in the game. A great team effort, on the fourth, saw East Williamston get 5 and their lead restored. Another 1 on the fifth and it looked as though victory was in sight. However Penally hadn’t finished yet, taking 1 on the sixth, 2 on the seventh and 1 on the eighth. With the gap back to 3 East Williamston needed to manage the final end. The visitors were holding two or three until Penally disrupted things, but a lovely bowl in by the visitors secured 1 shot and the win. Overall Result : Tied 5 -5 (Penally were 3 + 2 bonus points for shots) , 43 - 52 Shots Singles Tied 12 - 12 (1 Point) Pairs Win 13 - 5 (2 Points) Triples Loss 4 - 25 (0 Points) Rinks Win 14 - 10 (2 Points) Aggregate Shots 43 - 52 (0 Points) |
